Book Description
Formally approved by Pope Francis, this present work is the contribution of the Pontifi cal Biblical Commission toward a more adequate understanding of the concepts of inspiration and truth that respects both the nature of the Bible and its signifi cance for the life of the Church. Drawing on a close reading of the Scriptures themselves, the document focuses on three main aspects: 1. The inspiration of Sacred Scripture and the exploration of its divine provenance 2. The truth of the Word of God, emphasizing the message about God and his project of salvation 3. Challenges that arise from the Bible itself, on account of certain aspects that seem inconsistent with its quality of being the Word of God

Excerpt from book: THE WORD AND ITS INSPIRATION. CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION.-GENERAL STRUCTURE OF THE NARRATIVE. As to the particular form in which the descriptive narrative (of creation) is conveyed, we merely affirm that it cannot be History?it may be Poetry.?Rev. Baden Powell, M.A., F.R.S., F.L.S., F.O.S., Savilian Profettor of Geometry in the University of Oxford. Art. Creation, in Kitto't Biblical Cyclopadia. In order correctly to understand the written documents of antiquity, it is necessary to know something of the genius of the people among whom they were produced. Without this information, we are liable to great mistakes. Very different styles of writing have prevailed among the same nations at successive periods of their existence; and the deeper we penetrate into their mental history, the less literal and more poetical shall we find their methods of communication. This fact is not to be disregarded in prosecuting the inquiry we have now before us. It bears forcibly upon the point; and this leads us to ask, Whether Antediluvian History, as contained in the Bible, was written in accordance with that historical and grammatical criticism by which it has been common to interpret it in modern times ? We think not. The record of creation has been found to give way before the discoveries and demands of science. The genius of a matter-of-fact people is not the precise thing by which to judge of the literary productions of a period essentially spiritual and poetical. Therefore we may again ask, Whether this peculiar condition of mind, which prevailed during the early periods of our race, when these remarkable documents were originally produced, may not have induced them to describe mental existences and moral processes in an historical form ? May not the rise of the human mind out of inac...

Book Description
Treats of the word of God in its historical formation and in its life in the Church. It treats, then, of the speech which God necessarily employs in his dialogue with mankind. Through an analysis of the functions of language, of the psychology of literary inspiration, of the social context of all speech, of the nature, the translation and the reception of the completed work, the author develops a theory of Biblical inspiration which is integral and organic because it is faithful both to the divine and the human aspect of God's word.
