Policies to Address Poverty in America

Policies to Address Poverty in America PDF Author: Melissa Kearney
Publisher: Brookings Institution Press
ISBN: 0815726473
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 508

Book Description
One-in-seven adults and one-in-five children in the United States live in poverty. Individuals and families living in povertyÊnot only lack basic, material necessities, but they are also disproportionally afflicted by many social and economic challenges. Some of these challenges include the increased possibility of an unstable home situation, inadequate education opportunities at all levels, and a high chance of crime and victimization. Given this growing social, economic, and political concern, The Hamilton Project at Brookings asked academic experts to develop policy proposals confronting the various challenges of AmericaÕs poorest citizens, and to introduce innovative approaches to addressing poverty.ÊWhen combined, the scope and impact of these proposals has the potential to vastly improve the lives of the poor. The resulting 14 policy memos are included in The Hamilton ProjectÕs Policies to Address Poverty in America. The main areas of focus include promoting early childhood development, supporting disadvantaged youth, building worker skills, and improving safety net and work support.

Success in Social Marketing

Success in Social Marketing PDF Author: Nancy R. Lee
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000586537
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Social marketing, a field first introduced by Philip Kotler and Gerald Zaltman in a pioneering article in the Journal of Marketing in 1971, uses marketing concepts to influence the behaviors of individuals and communities for the greater social good. Now, as the discipline celebrates its 50th anniversary, Success in Social Marketing provides an accessible and comprehensive guide to the field, introducing stories from around the world including public health, injury prevention, environmental protection, community engagement, financial well-being, and education. The 100 case examples contained in this book, each about two pages in length, follow an outline that includes key components of a campaign: Wicked Problem, Purpose & Focus, Priority Audience, Desired Behavior, Audience Insights, Marketing Intervention Mix, and Results. This common structure provides the reader with a clear sense of how success in social marketing may best be achieved in a wide variety of disciplinary and national contexts. Success in Social Marketing is intended to fill a gap in the market as well as inform and inspire students and practitioners through 100 easily digestible case studies. Issues addressed include public health (opioid use, mental health, COVID-19) , injury prevention (gun violence, youth suicide, texting while driving), environmental protection (wildfires, bicycle transportation in urban areas, food waste), community engagement (homelessness, racially motivated violence, voting) financial wellbeing (microfinance, savings, employment), and educational achievement (early childhood education, college applications, female participation in STEM programs), to name but a few. This book is recommended reading for students enrolled in public administration, public health, environmental studies, as well as policymakers interested in ways social marketing may help influence their constituent behaviors for individual, as well as social, good.

Fiscal Therapy

Fiscal Therapy PDF Author: William G. Gale
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190645431
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
Keeping the economy strong will require addressing two distinct but related problems. Steadily rising federal debt makes it harder to grow our economy, boost our living standards, respond to wars or recessions, address social needs, and maintain our role as a global leader. At the same time, we have let critical investments lag and left many people behind even as overall prosperity has grown. In Fiscal Therapy, William Gale, a leading authority on how federal tax and budget policy affects the economy, provides a trenchant discussion of the challenges posed by the imbalances between spending and revenue. America is facing a gradual decline as debt accumulates and delay raises the costs of action. But there is hope: fiscal responsibility aligns with both conservative and liberal goals and citizens of all stripes can support the notion of making life better for our children and grandchildren. Gale provides a plan to make the economy and nation stronger, one that controls entitlement spending but preserves and enhances their anti-poverty and social insurance roles, increases public investments on human and physical capital, and raises and reforms taxes to pay for government services in a fair and efficient way. What is needed, he argues, is to balance today's needs against tomorrow's obligations. We face significant fiscal challenges but, if we are wise enough to seize our opportunities, we can strengthen our economy, increase opportunity, reduce inequality, and build better lives for our children and grandchildren. We do not have to kill popular programs or starve government. Indeed, one main goal of fiscal reform is to maintain the vital functions that government provides. We need to act responsibly, pay for the government we want, and shape that government in ways that serve us best.

Stand Together or Starve Alone

Stand Together or Starve Alone PDF Author: Mark Winne
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1440844488
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
The United States-one of the world's wealthiest and resource-richest nations-has multiple food-related problems: declining food quality due to industrialization of its production, obesity across all age groups, and a surprisingly large number of households suffering from food insecurity. These issues threaten to shorten the lives of many and significantly reduce the quality of life for millions of others. This book explores the root causes of food-related problems in the 20th and 21st centuries and explains why collective impact-the social form of working together for a common goal-needs to be employed to reach a successful resolution to hunger, obesity, and the challenges of the industrial food system. Authored by Mark Winne, a 45-year food activist, the book begins with background information about the evolution of the U.S. food movement since the 1960s that documents its incredible growth and variety of interests, organizations, and sectors. The subsequent sections demonstrate how these divergent interests have created a lack of unity and deterred real change and improvement. Through examples from specific cities and states as well as a discussion of group dynamics and coalition-building methods, readers come away with an understanding of a complicated topic and grasp the potential of a number of strategies for creating more cohesion within the food movement-and realizing meaningful improvements in our food system for current and future generations.
