A Military History of Ireland

A Military History of Ireland PDF Author: Thomas Bartlett
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521629898
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 596

Book Description
This is a major, collaborative study of organised military activity and its broad impact on Ireland over the last thousand years or so, from the middle of the first millennium AD to modern times. It integrates the best recent scholarship in military history into its social and political context to provide a comprehensive treatment of the Irish military experience. The eighteen chronologically-organised chapters are written by leading scholars each of whom is an authority on the period in question. Drawing the whole work together is a wide-ranging introductory essay on the 'Irish military tradition' which explores the relationship of Irish society and politics with militarism and military affairs. The text is illustrated throughout by over 120 pictures and maps.

Protestant War

Protestant War PDF Author: Robert Armstrong
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 9780719069833
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
The Protestants of Ireland are a missing piece in the puzzle of the wars of the three kingdoms of the 1640s. This book provides a rich narrative of the struggles and dilemmas of that community, and its place in the wider conflict throughout Britain and Ireland. New light is shed upon the aims and aspirations of parliamentarians, royalists and covenanters in civil war England, and the formation of Protestant and "British" identities in seventeenth century Ireland.

Book Description
Ireland under the Stuarts and During the Interregnum in three volumes is a historical account of Ireland in the 17th century, covering the period from 1603, when James VI King of Scots became James I of England and Ireland, to the Glorious Revolution and the end of Stuart's reign in Ireland. First part of the book spans from 1603 to 1642 covering the period from the time King James VI united the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland in a personal union to the Wars of the Three Kingdoms an intertwined series of conflicts that led to abolition of monarchy and the interregnum. Second part covers the period from 1642 to the end of interregnum in 1660 when Charles II was restored to the thrones of the three realms. The final part of the work covers the years from the restoration of monarchy to the Glorious Revolution, the overthrowing of the Stuart Dynasty and the crowning of William of Orange for the king of England, Ireland and Scotland.
