The West Will Swallow You

Book Description
At eighteen, Vermont-native Leath Tonino ventured west to attend college in Colorado. Upon hearing his destination, many of Tonino’s friends and family predicted that he’d never come back; he’d make the “land of endless space and sky, its ranges and their storms” his home. “The West will swallow you,” one said, in a tone that felt like part warning and part prophecy. More than a decade later Tonino continues to call Vermont his home. But despite his love of New England and his admiration for writers who sing the praises of their native ground, he concedes that he is, as Gary Snyder once phrased it, “promiscuous with landscapes.” Tonino has spent the intervening years since college traversing “the alphabet of the American West from AZ to CA to UT to WY” and writing about its mysterious and powerful beauty. The resulting musings are collected in The West Will Swallow You, the title of which is a nod to the words that stayed with him and that, in many ways, turned out to be true. Although the adventures gathered here range widely in terrain and tone, the western landscape is always front and center—focusing on Arizona’s remote Kaibab Plateau, where Tonino worked as a biologist studying raptor communities, in San Francisco’s overgrown nooks and crannies and pigeon-flocked park benches, on ranches in Wyoming, at campsites in Nevada, in the mountains of Colorado, and “in libraries and national monuments, in people, in a midnight fox’s eyes, in the rushing wind.”

Book Description
Lesbian and gay--or queer--fiction (known in Mandarin as tongzhi wenxue) constitutes a major contribution to Taiwanese literature, as evidenced by the remarkable number of prestigious literary awards won by many of the authors of the short stories presented here. Indeed, the meteoric rise of this new genre was a defining feature of Taiwan's literary scene in the 1990s. Queer fiction was also instrumental in forming self-identifying subcultural gay readerships, thus serving a significant political function. But most strikingly, this fiction has been immensely popular with general readers in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, as well as in diasporic Chinese communities worldwide. The startlingly fresh, brave voices that speak through these stories attest to the powerful social ferment of the past ten years in Taiwan, which have witnessed a revolution in discourses on sex and sexuality in the public sphere. Contributors: Chu T'ien-Wen, Qiu Miaojin, Chu T'ien-Hsin, Hsu Yoshen, Lin Yuyi, Lin Chun Ying, Chen Xue, Hong Ling, Chi Tawei, Wu Jiwen.

Songs from Bialik

Songs from Bialik PDF Author: Atar Hadari
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 9780815606055
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
Hayim Nahman Bialik (1873-1934) is considered Israel's national poet and one of the greatest Hebrew poets of all time. Several of his poems, particularly his immensely popular children's verse, were set to music and proved to be among the most popular twentieth-century Hebrew songs. An essayist, storyteller, translator, and editor, he had a unique ability to use fully the entire linguistic and conceptual inventory of the Hebrew language. Bialik's career was a turning point in Hebrew literature, bringing Biblical Hebrew into a contemporary usage and forming the basis of its renewed vigor. His legacy remains embedded in modern Hebrew literature like an immovable foundation stone. Atar Hadari's new translation of Bialik's major poetry fills a long-standing gap in English letters.

Book Description
“What is the meaning of a vast, deep sea if love wishes to cross it and dive into it, my friend?” sang Anila. The monkeys all stopped their work to dance and answer Anila’s riddle. “The sea will become a lake and love will become a pair of golden puppets on the water’s surface. The depth of the ocean will vanish, the vastness of the sea will be crossed and the pair of golden puppets will bathe in the lake.” “What is the meaning of two very distant lands if love wishes to unite them, my friend?” asked Cucak Rawun. “The vast land will become but a handful of earth traversed by the wings of love. Who else, other than love, can fly like a bolt of lightning? Not just land, but even heaven can be crossed in just an instant if love flies with its wings,” answered the monkeys in response to Cucak Rawun’s song. “What is the meaning of a high and mighty mountain if love wishes to destroy it, my friend?” Kapi Menda sang loudly and melodiously. “The mountain will be razed to the ground and the lovers who were hiding on opposite sides of it will face each other. Even though they had been yearning for each other when they were apart, they will be shy when the mountain that had kept them apart collapses. But as the power of the mountain crumbles, their shyness will also crumble and they will embrace each other on the remains of the mountain that once separated them,” answered the monkeys. *** Herding the Wind is a beautiful retelling from the great epic Ramayana. This book tells the story about the journey of Rama and Sita, their exile and pursuit of love. Not only recites divine characters, this book also tells about unique characters like Anoman and bajang child who bring hope and joy. Since it was first published, this book gained widely acceptance among readers.
