Book Description
Excerpt from The Wearied Christ and Other Sermons Two pictures result from these two verses, each striking in itself, and gaining additional emphasis by the contrast. It was near the close of a long, hot days march that a tired band of pedestrians turned into the fertile valley. There, whilst the disciples went into the little hill-village to purchase, if they could, some food from the despised inhabitants, Jesus, apparently too exhausted to accompany them, "sat thus on the well." That little word thus seems to have a force difficult to reproduce in English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Christ's Musts: And Other Sermons I Have chosen this text for the sake of one word in it, that solemn must which was so often on our Lord's lips. I have no purpose of dealing with the remainder of this clause, nor, indeed, with it at all, except as one instance of His use of the expression. But I felt it might be interesting, and might set old truths in a brighter light, if we gather together the instances in which Christ speaks of the great necessity which dominated His life, and shaped even small acts. The expression is most frequently used in reference to the Passion and Resurrection. There are many instances in the other Gospels, in which He speaks of that must. The first of these is that of my text. Then there is another class, of which His word to His mother when a twelve-year-old child may be taken as a type, "Wist ye not that I must be about My Father's business?" Book Description
Excerpt from Christ His Own Interpreter: And Other Sermons John X' am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. If there ever was a Being, wearing the human form and living among men, who knew Himself and why He came here it was the Man Christ Jesus. He always walked in the shadow of the Cross He never forgot that He came here to, do the Father's will. Self-knowledge is the most difficult knowledge which men ever attain. There is no sphynx in Egypt like the sphynx in a man's bosom. Men think too much or too little of them selves. They pride themselves on being What they are not: on having a Sphere which is not theirs. They undertake to do what they can not do they leave undone What they might do. All from want of self-knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
