Book Description
Excerpt from The Visions of Quevedo The author of the Spanish Library, expresses him self of Quevedo, in the following terms: He knew how to reconcile the gravest studies with pleasantries and wit. His style is embellished with the ornaments of an adroitly managed application: he has so much finesse, such an immense fund of invention, of ideas as novel as ingenious - so much soft and delicate irony he understands so well, whether in verse or prose, how to sketch with facility a pleasant or ridiculous subject, that among gay writers there is not one comparable to him. Nervous and sublime in heroic poetry, graceful in lyric verse, full of wit and gaiety in his sportive works, his genius illuminates the weakest subjects. The Sleeping Bard

The Sleeping Bard PDF Author: Ellis Wynne

Category : Fiction

Pages : 144

Book Description
Excerpt from The Sleeping Bard: Or Visions of the World, Death, and Hell Nevertheless, though there is a considerable amount of what is Quevedo's in the Visions of Elis Wyn, there is a vast deal in them which strictly belongs to the Welshman. Upon the whole, the Cambrian work is superior to the Spanish. There is more unity of purpose in it, and it is far less eucum bered with useless matter. In reading Quevedo's Visions, it is frequently difficult to guess what the writer is aiming at; not so whilst perusing those of Elis Wyn. It is always clear enough, that the Welshman is either lashing the follies or vices of the world, showing the certainty of death, or endeavouring to keep people from Hell, by conveying to them an idea of the torments to which the guilty are subjee ted in a future state. ISBN:
Category : Fiction

Book Description
"The Visions of Dom Francisco de Quevedo Villegas" is a satire that taxes corruption of manners, in all sorts and degrees of people, without reflecting upon particular states or persons. It is full of sharpness and morality. Francisco Gómez de Quevedo y Santibáñez Villegas (1580-1645) was a Spanish nobleman, politician and writer of the Baroque era. Along with his lifelong rival, Luis de Góngora, Quevedo was one of the most prominent Spanish poets of the age.
