Pandemic, Ecology and Theology

Pandemic, Ecology and Theology PDF Author: Alexander Hampton
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000291421
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
As the sequential stages of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic have unfolded, so have its complexities. What initially presented as a health emergency, has revealed itself to be a phenomenon of many facets. It has demonstrated human creativity, the oft neglected presence of nature, and the resilience of communities. Equally, it has exposed deep social inequities, conceptual inadequacies, and structural deficiencies about the way we organize our civilization and our knowledge. As the situation continues to advance, the question is whether the crisis will be grasped as an opportunity to address the deep structural, ecological and social challenges that we brought with us into the second decade of the new millennium. This volume addresses the collective sense that the pandemic is more than a problem to manage our way out of. Rather, it is a moment to consider our broken relationship with the natural world, and our alienation from a deeper sense of purpose and meaning. The contributors, though differing in their diagnoses and recommendations, share the belief that this moment, with its transformative possibility, not be forfeit. Equally, they share the conviction that the chief ground of any such reorientation ineluctably involves our collective engagement with both ecology and theology.

Theatre of Light and Dark

Theatre of Light and Dark PDF Author: David Hamilton
Publisher: New Generation Publishing
ISBN: 1789554845
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
I have written essays on art, architecture and literature for New English Review under Theodore Dalrymple. People think we should follow and as it's the facebook age write in little bits or compete with reality TV by telling all about us. I write traditional-style poems with, I hope, meaning. A publisher described me as The Rebel Poet because I ignore literary fashion and write in my own way.I like travelling and have been to many parts of the country, towns, cities and villages. My method for finding interesting local places is to ring the local tourist office and when I arrive I go to a pub and talk to local people who know the interesting places. I take a lot of photographs of these places and a very small example is in the Gallery on my website. I am taking notes for a future large volume of Literary Essays which will range from medieval Literature to the twentieth century. I studied English literature, Dramatic Structure and Playwriting, Film Structure and script writing. I find that when I am busy a break in a traditional pub is refreshing and you return to work with new ideas and a fresh view of what you are doing. People ask what one's influences are: I try to write in my own way. But a lifetime of reading leaves a mark.

Light, Freedom and Song

Light, Freedom and Song PDF Author: David Pierce
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 9780300109948
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
In this absorbing analysis of modern Irish writing, an acknowledged expert considers the hybrid character of modern Irish writing to show how language, culture, and history have been affected by the colonial encounter between Ireland and Britain. Examining the great themes of loss and struggle, David Pierce traces the impact on Irish writing of the Great Famine and cultural nationalism and considers the way the work of Ireland’s two leading writers, W. B.Yeats and James Joyce, complicate and elucidate our view of "the harp and the crown.” The book draws a contrast between the West of Ireland in the 1930s, when the new Irish State enjoyed its first full independent decade, and the North of Ireland in the 1980s, when the spectre of British imperialism threatened the stability of Ireland. Pierce then surveys contemporary Irish writing and reflects on the legacy of the colonial encounter and on the passage to a postmodern or postnationalist Ireland in the work of such crucial living writers as John Banville, Derek Mahon, and John McGahern.
