The Virtue in the Vice

The Virtue in the Vice PDF Author: Robin Rex Meyers
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780757302213
Category : Virtues
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
One of America's most thoughtful ministers adds a startling new twist to the Seven Deadly Sins. Our world is awash in false dichotomies: "You're either for us or against us, good or evil, 'born again' or 'left behind.'" Virtue is virtue, and vice is vice, but is it really that simple? Are the rules of proper conduct that black and white? With extraordinary clarity of thought and word, Dr. Robin Meyers argues that there are seven vital, life-affirming attributes everyone must embrace to lead a full life-and that in fact not only are these virtues not the opposite of evil, but that each is based on urges and instinct that are similar to the Seven Deadly Sins. Pride is a sin; Self-worth is essential to life. Envy is a sin; Emulation is essential to life. Anger is a sin; Righteous Indignation is essential to life. Lust is a sin; Holy Eros is essential to life. Gluttony is a sin; Communion is essential to life. Greed is a sin; Wanting Wisely is essential to life. Sloth is a sin; Contentment is essential to life. This isn't a philosophical treatise (although after reading this book no reader will ever think about morality in the same way again). The Virtue in the Vice uses personal stories, pop culture examples, and anecdotes from both the contemporary world and the Bible to create a practical plan for living. This book will help people embrace the ambiguity of life and the moral clarity that comes with honoring their own rights and needs and those of their fellow man.

The Structures of Virtue and Vice

The Structures of Virtue and Vice PDF Author: Daniel J. Daly
Publisher: Georgetown University Press
ISBN: 164712039X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
A new ethics for understanding the social forces that shape moral character. It is easy to be vicious and difficult to be virtuous in today’s world, especially given that many of the social structures that connect and sustain us enable exploitation and disincentivize justice. There are others, though, that encourage virtue. In his book Daniel J. Daly uses the lens of virtue and vice to reimagine from the ground up a Catholic ethics that can better scrutinize the social forces that both affect our moral character and contribute to human well-being or human suffering. Daly’s approach uses both traditional and contemporary sources, drawing on the works of Thomas Aquinas as well as incorporating theories such as critical realist social theory, to illustrate the nature and function of social structures and the factors that transform them. Daly’s ethics focus on the relationship between structure and agency and the different structures that enable and constrain an individual’s pursuit of the virtuous life. His approach defines with unique clarity the virtuous structures that facilitate a love of God, self, neighbor, and creation, and the vicious structures that cultivate hatred, intemperance, and indifference to suffering. In doing so, Daly creates a Catholic ethical framework for responding virtuously to the problems caused by global social systems, from poverty to climate change.

Book Description
The recovered possess the key to overcoming anorexia. Although individual sufferers do not know how the affliction takes hold, piecing their stories together reveals two accidental afflictions. One is that activity disorders—dieting, exercising, healthy eating—start as virtuous practices, but become addictive obsessions. The other affliction is a developmental disorder, which also starts with the virtuous—those eager for challenge and change. But these overachievers who seek self-improvement get a distorted life instead. Knowing anorexia from inside, the recovered offer two watchwords on helping those who suffer. One is "negotiate," to encourage compromise, which can aid recovery where coercion fails. The other is "balance," for the ill to pursue mind-with-body activities to defuse mind-over-body battles.

Virtue and Vice in Popular Film

Virtue and Vice in Popular Film PDF Author: Joseph H. Kupfer
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 100041342X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 106

Book Description
This book addresses a prominent group of virtues and vices as portrayed in popular films to further our understanding of these moral character traits. The discussions emphasize the interplay between the philosophical conception of the virtues and vices and the cinematic representations of character. Joseph H. Kupfer explores how fictional characters possessing certain moral strengths and weaknesses concretize our abstract understanding of them. Because the actions that flow from these traits occur in cinematic contexts mirroring real world conditions, the narrative portrayals of these moral characteristics can further our appreciation of their import. Humility, integrity, and perseverance, for example, are depicted in Chariots of Fire, The Fabulous Baker Boys, and Billy Elliot, while the vices of envy, arrogance and vanity are captured in Amadeus, Whiplash, and Young Adult. This interdisciplinary work in philosophy and film criticism will be of great interest to scholars and students of film studies, philosophy of film, ethics, aesthetics, and popular culture.

Virtue, Vice, and Personality

Virtue, Vice, and Personality PDF Author: Edward Chin-Ho Chang
Publisher: Amer Psychological Assn
ISBN: 9781591470137
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
In this classic of biology and modern science, Sir D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson (1860-1948), one of the most distinguished scientists of the modern era, sets forth his seminal "theory of transformation" - that one species evolves into another not by successive minor changes in individual body parts but by large-scale transformations involving the body as a whole. First written in 1917, the book was revised by Thompson in 1942 -- the revision reprinted here. The esteem in which this monumental, lavishly illustrated work is universally held derives not only from its scholarship and creativity, but also from the rich literary style that exemplifies Thompson's great erudition in the physical and natural sciences, ancient and modern languages and the humanities. The book begins with studies of organic magnitude, the rate of growth, cellular form and structure, adsorption, and the forms of tissues, then examines a vast spectrum of life forms, and concludes with a comparison of related forms that leads to the theory of transformations.

Markets in Vice, Markets in Virtue

Markets in Vice, Markets in Virtue PDF Author: John Braithwaite
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780195222012
Category : Competition
Languages : en
Pages : 262

Book Description
This sweeping, comparative study of taxation in the United States and Australia shows that even as governments in the Western world have become increasingly sophisticated tax collectors, a competitive and ruthless market in advice on tax avoidance has developed. The same competitive forces in the late twentieth century which have driven down prices and sparked efficiencies in the production of fast food or computer parts have helped stimulate the markets for "bads" like tax shelters and problem gambling. Braithwaite draws the surprising conclusion that effective regulation could actually flip markets in vice to markets of virtue. Essential reading for anyone involved in policy, governance, and regulation, Markets in Vice, Markets in Virtue provides a blueprint for restoring the equity of Western tax systems and a breakthrough theory of how regulators can support markets in virtue and curtail markets in vice.
