Patterns of Piety

Patterns of Piety PDF Author: Christine Peters
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521580625
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
This book offers a new interpretation of the transition from Catholicism to Protestantism in the English Reformation, and explores its implications for an understanding of women and gender. It argues that late medieval Christocentric piety shaped the nature of the Reformation, and reasseses assumptions that the 'loss' of the Virgin Mary and the saints was detrimental to women. In defining the representative frail Christian as a woman devoted to Christ, the Reformation could not be an alien environment for women, while the Christocentric tradition encouraged the questioning of gender stereotypes.

The Art and Science of the Church Screen in Medieval Europe

The Art and Science of the Church Screen in Medieval Europe PDF Author: Spike Bucklow
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer
ISBN: 178327123X
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
Fresh examinations of one of the most important church furnishings of the middle ages. The churches of medieval Europe contained richly carved and painted screens, placed between the altar and the congregation; they survive in particularly high numbers in England, despite being partly dismantled during the Reformation. While these screens divided "lay" from "priestly" jurisdiction, it has also been argued that they served to unify architectural space. This volume brings together the latest scholarship on the subject, exploring in detail numerous aspects of the construction and painting of screens, it aims in particular to unite perspectives from science and art history. Examples are drawn from a wide geographical range, from Scandinavia to Italy. Spike Bucklow is Director of Research at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge; Richard Marks is Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at the University of York and currently a member of the History of Art Department, University of Cambridge; Lucy Wrapson is Assistant to the Director at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge. Contributors: Paul Binski, Spike Bucklow, Donal Cooper, David Griffith, Hugh Harrison, JacquelineJung, Justin Kroesen, Julian Luxford, Richard Marks, Ebbe Nyborg, Eddie Sinclair, Jeffrey West, Lucy Wrapson.

Public Piers Plowman

Public Piers Plowman PDF Author: C. David Benson
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 9780271046204
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
"Public Piers Plowman is divided into two parts. The first is an extended essay on what Benson calls the "Langland myth." He traces the evolution of Piers scholarship and demonstrates the limitations of treating Piers as a direct expression of the poet's experience and intellectual views." "In the second part Benson offers an alternative history for the poem. Benson approaches it from a broader public context, using representative examples from vernacular writing, parish art, and civic practices. He argues that Piers reached a wide contemporary audience because, far from being an account only of the author's own life and opinions, it was securely rooted in the common culture of its time and place."--Jacket.
