Shenandoah Valley Folklife
Author: Scott Hamilton Suter
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1496800605
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
Bordered by the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley forms a natural corridor to the western parts of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Early American settlers followed the valley as one of the first routes westward. In Shenandoah Valley Folklife, Scott Hamilton Suter documents the many peoples who have left their marks on the folkways of the region--Native Americans, Germans, Swiss, Scots-Irish, and African Americans. His research reveals how the first settlers there built homes, how they worshiped, and how they passed on legends and musical traditions that continue to play a role in the community today. Throughout the book, Suter argues that the valley's past plays a definitive role in its present. He finds family traditions still thriving in crafts like white oak basket-making, as well as in cooking and architecture. To illuminate the change and continuity in religious life, he focuses on Old Order Mennonites, the Church of the Brethren, and Baptists in the region. Using both historical sources and his own field work, Suter shows how folklife remains a powerful, resonant force in the Shenandoah, and how new immigrants are adapting and adding their own traditions to long-standing customs.

Book Description
From Winchester to Tidewater, Danville to Fairfax, black baseball is the longest-running form of entertainment and recreation in the black communities of Virginia. For five decades, the black teams of Old Dominion played their form of Negro league baseball in rural pastures, city parks, and, for a forunate few, minor league stadiums. The players and humble facilities mirrored the essence of what evolved into the professional Negro leagues--the same fast-paced play and showmanship, complemented by memorable and charismatic athletes. This history tells the story of black baseball in Virginia, thoroughly illustrated with historical photographs. Through Jim Crow segregation, the Civil Rights Movement and the early stages of integration, black baseball in Virginia meant family and community. This history tells the stories of these communities and players, often day laborers who gave it all on the field after a grueling day's work. These men and their families are documented here as an important piece of history for both baseball and the state of Virginia. The second edition expands the timeline covered to include the 1920s, with a new chapter on Virginia native and black baseball legend Pete Hill.

A Surgeon's Civil War
Author: Daniel M. Holt
Publisher: Kent State University Press
ISBN: 9780873385381
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 326
Book Description
Daniel M. Holt, a successful country doctor in the upstate village of Newport, New York, accepted the position of assistant surgeon in the 121st New York Volunteer Army in August 1862. At age 42 when he was commissioned, he was the oldest member of the staff. But his experience served him well, as his regiment participated in nearly all the major campaigns in the eastern theater of the war--Crampton's Gap before Antietam, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, the Mine Run campaign, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign, and Appomattox. In A Surgeon's Civil War, the educated and articulate Holt describes camp life, army politics, and the medical difficulties that he and his colleagues experienced. His reminiscences and letters provide an insider's look at medicine as practiced on the battlefield and offer occasional glimpses of the efficacy of Surgeon General William A. Hammond's reforms as they affected Holt's regiment. He also comments on other subjects, including slavery and national events. Holt served until October 17, 1864 when ill health forced him to resign.

Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1683580567
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
In Tales from the Cincinnati Reds Dugout, fans can join former pitcher Tom Browning for legendary tales of festivity (the 1990 World Series championship), immortality (a perfect game in 1988), and a bit of eccentricity (life with owner Marge Schott). He tries to answer a variety of questions that fans have been asking for years: What was his reaction to the lifetime suspension of his manager and friend Pete Rose? How did a ragtag group of Cincinnati ballplayers topple the mighty Oakland A's in the 1990 Fall Classic? Was that really Tom on a Sheffield Avenue rooftop—in uniform—during a 1993 Reds-Cubs game at Wrigley Field? Browning also offers stories and anecdotes about some of the biggest names in Reds history, including Pete Rose, Tony Perez, Marge Schott, Lou Piniella, Eric Davis, Dave Parker, Buddy Bell, Barry Larkin, Joe Nuxhall, Mario Soto, and Jose Rijo. He devotes an entire chapter to his perfect game, considered to be one of the greatest moments in club history. Tales from the Cincinnati Reds Dugout is a must-have for any Reds fan.
