The Hostile Sky

The Hostile Sky PDF Author: Doris C. Vernon
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 1612513166
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 171

Book Description
In the summer of 1942 Jim Vernon, a nineteen-year-old student in Butte, Montana, joined the U.S. Navy’s aviation cadet training program. By the end of the war he was flying F6F Hellcats from the USS Ticonderoga against the Japanese mainland. This memoir provides a carrier pilot’s view of the conflict in the Pacific during the final months of the war when the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan capitulated. A member of VBF-87, Vernon gives a highly personal eyewitness account of life in a bomber-fighter squadron and the roller-coaster emotions involved in combat sorties over the hostile sea and land. He describes his feelings about meeting the challenges of war and offers stirring memories of his love of flying and the camaraderie of his flying mates—both in the air and on liberty. Added to this entertaining narrative are details of the mobilization and training of carrier pilots as well as a discussion of the high incidence of noncombat fatalities and the air group’s response to the kamikaze threat, information that contributes important dimensions to the overall story of the air war. Completely candid about his emotions regarding day and night landings and errors made in the cockpit, Vernon gives a vivid glimpse into the past at a time when teenagers matured rapidly as they faced the realities of war. His recollections will strike a cord of recognition with aviators everywhere and will inform and entertain those with an interest in World War II combat.

Book Description
Description: Grumman F6F Hellcats with crew aboard unidentified US aircraft carrier. Caption: "File No: AM-PAC-46-43862-TR-4323. Sunday, December 19, 1943. Pacific Task Force. The knockout punch of U.S. Naval Aviation is being delivered with over-growing power and an ever-longer reach by aircraft carrier task forces. U.S. Navy task forces have been seeking out the enemy in the Central and Southern Pacific blasting his fortifications, capturing his outposts, and sinking his warships. A carrier task forces beats out a grim symphony, mixing heavy bombs from Avenger torpedo planes and Dauntless dive bombers with blasting shells of cruisers' big rifles and chattering guns of Hellcat fighters. Props spinning, Navy Hellcats take off from their big flat-top for another strike at Wake. The first wave was launched before dawn October 5. All that day and the next, Japs were hammered by carrier-based aircraft, land-based Navy Liberators and 6- and 8-inch shells hurled by cruisers standing offshore. Hellcat fighters and Avenger torpedo bombers pounded the island first, followed by Dauntless dive bombers with their 1,000-pounders. This carrier, one of several engaging in the attack, is steaming back and forth some distance off the island. Official US Navy Photograph.".

Hellcat vs Shiden/Shiden-Kai

Hellcat vs Shiden/Shiden-Kai PDF Author: Tony Holmes
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472829735
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 81

Book Description
By the early months of 1944 in the Pacific, the US Navy's burgeoning force of carrier-based F6F-3/5 Hellcats had pretty much wiped the skies clear of Japanese fighters during a series of one-sided aerial engagements. However, starting in October they faced the superb Kawanishi N1K1/2 Shiden/Shiden-Kai, a formidable fighter with improved armament, a powerful engine and excellent manoeuvrability that in contrast to earlier Japanese fighters had the ability to withstand a greater degree of battle damage. Japanese pilots using this aircraft would claim more than 170 aerial victories over Kyushu and whilst escorting Kamikazes attacking Allied ships off Okinawa. US Navy Hellcat pilots in turn were credited with many of the scores of Shiden-Kais that were downed attempting to defend Japan. This fully illustrated book compares these two fascinating aircraft, using specially commissioned artwork, first-hand accounts and a thorough technical analysis.

World War II US Fast Carrier Task Force Tactics 1943–45

World War II US Fast Carrier Task Force Tactics 1943–45 PDF Author: Brian Lane Herder
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472836588
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 65

Book Description
Drawing on difficult-to-access wartime documents and other contemporary sources, this is the first compact, illustrated study of the tactics and techniques of the US fast carriers of Task Forces 50, 58 and 38 during the naval war against Japan in 1943–45. This title concentrates on exactly how these highly successful forces actually operated: their composition in ships, aircraft and men; the essential technology at their disposal; the evolving doctrine for their employment; the opposition and dangers they faced; and how they overcame them at the tactical level. It explains in straightforward terms the intricate details of topics such as how ships manoeuvred, how aircraft were deployed and recovered, the formations and approaches used by fighters, dive-bombers and torpedo-bombers against naval and land targets, and how Task Forces defended themselves. The text is supported by a wide range of wartime photos and full-colour illustrations, showing, for example, the formations employed by ships and aircraft, with altitudes and ranges throughout the course of attacks.
