Book Description
Wikis have been extensively used in language teaching for collaborative writing. However, there are very few studies about wikis as holistic learning environments. To fill this niche, the present research project aimed to explore the potential of the wiki as a platform for knowledge building and personalized learning that may enhance lifelong learning and students' self-regulation. Individual learning paths were encouraged by the introduction of a personalized evaluation system, in which points were given for any task the students had completed. A further aim was to find out about students' perceived language development, their disposition towards the wiki and the evaluation system with the help of mid-course and end-of-course questionnaires. The participants of the study were 26 tourism BA students at a university in Budapest who used the wiki for all the three terms of their language course. Results show that the integration of a wiki in a professional English course in higher education is received positively by the students. [For full proceedings, see ED565087.].

Using Wikipedia to Enhance Student Learning

Using Wikipedia to Enhance Student Learning PDF Author: Tiago Freire

Book Description
Currently, there is widespread interest in how Web 2.0 tools can be used to improve students' learning experiences. Previous studies have focused either on the advantages of wikis or on concerns over the use of Wikipedia. In this study, we propose to use Wikipedia as a classroom wiki. In doing so, we discuss how students can improve their standard written assignments using Wikipedia instead of a module wiki. Compared to traditional essay assignments, students' submission of articles to Wikipedia can address many of the problems faced by instructors of traditional assignments, such as students' poor writing skills, lack of primary source research, and poorly balanced discussions. Our study was based on our experience in teaching an upper-level economics module at the National University of Singapore over two semesters: 121 students who were enrolled in semester 1 submitted a traditional writing assignment, while 124 students enrolled in semester 2 contributed two short entries to Wikipedia. The results showed a large increase in the number of students checking their assignment feedback. Further, students' writing quality improved noticeably in the Wikipedia assignment, and they were able to put forth more balanced discussions of relevant issues and include a greater number of primary sources. Despite the challenges faced when using Wiki markup language, the students enjoyed the overall experience.

Wikis in the College Classroom

Wikis in the College Classroom PDF Author: James E. Coyle

Book Description
Wikis are Web-based online software programs that allow any user to add, edit, or delete content on a Wiki web page. Because of their relative simplicity and their interactive nature, Wikis are potentially effective tools for online collaborative group work, a type of activity frequently used in online distance education. This study examined online Wiki collaboration compared to more conventional face-to-face group collaboration in higher education. The study participants were juniors and seniors taking a senior-level broadcast communications course. They were divided into two groups, and each group collaborated on writing reports using both conventional face-to-face collaboration methods and collaboration using the Wiki function in Moodle course management software. Following completion of the reports, professional subject matter experts rated the quality of the reports according to specified content and format criteria. The study's research questions addressed (1) benefits and obstacles experienced in face-to-face collaboration; (2) benefits and obstacles experienced in Wiki-based group collaboration; (3) whether there was a difference between Wiki group collaboration and face-to-face group collaboration in terms of the quality of the final product; and (4) whether there was a difference in students' experiences of learning and sense of community after Wiki-based collaboration and face-to-face collaboration assignments. Results indicated there was no difference in the quality of reports related to the method of collaboration, suggesting that Wikis are an effective collaboration method; face-to-face collaboration is more efficient in terms of communication among group members and is sometimes preferred because it is familiar. Wiki collaboration allowed students to work at their own pace and to easily see the work of other group members. Students adapted Wiki capabilities to their previous methods of group work, and there was not a significant difference in students' experiences of learning and community between the two methods. Even though the Wiki software provided the capability, participants did not edit one another's Wiki work unless they had volunteered and were designated by the group to be an editor. Unless they were an editor, individual participants did not feel it was appropriate to change their peers' work.

Book Description
A book about wikis! That's what people need. Because with wiki technology, lots of people can freely work - gether – they can even generate very large works in the intellectual realm. See for yourself: Today, we still marvel at our massive church buildings, each c- structed over a period of centuries, requiring an immense amount of labor and often bearing the cultural stamp of all of the epochs during which it was created. Someone just has to begin by placing stone upon stone and motivate the people nearby to help out a bit. In places where such enthusiastic fellow men and women lend a hand and donate materials, great things can emerge. And where they are absent? Either scant ruins remain, or the iron will of a pharaoh is - quired, an army of drivers, the sweat of a people and a mountain of gold. Great things can also be created in that way – take the Py- mids: a clear concept, no blending of styles, pure will. Those are two very different paths. The one entails passionate people devotedly building something together for the common good; the other: a single will manages a variety of resources to achieve a set goal. Wikis are tools with which lots of people with a minimum of - ganization, planning, money and time can create something together and communicate with each other from several scattered computers or over the Internet.
