Category : Fiction

Pages : 382

Book Description
Lovers separated by the Iron Curtain Two women whose paths should never have crossed A remarkable journey that changes all of their lives Maria's history is a lie. Washed up on the shores of Sweden in 1944 with no memory, she was forced to create her own. Half a century later she still has no idea of her true identity. Jaak fights for Estonia's independence, refusing to accept the death of his fiancee, Maarja, whose ship was sunk as she fled across the Baltic Sea to escape the Soviet invasion. Angie knows exactly who she is. A drug addict. A waste of space. Life is just about getting by. A chance meeting in Edinburgh's Cancer Centre is the catalyst for something very different. Sometimes all you need is someone who listens. The Unravelling of Maria (96 000 words) is literary fiction told through three voices, Jaak an Estonian Forest Brother, captured by the Soviets and sent to a gulag in Kolyma; Maarja, his fiancee who fled in 1944 as the Soviets were about to invade, and Angie, a young Scottish drug addict. In Edinburgh, 1987, Maarja and Angie meet in the Cancer Centre and the unravelling begins.

Song for the Unraveling of the World

Song for the Unraveling of the World PDF Author: Brian Evenson
Publisher: Coffee House Press
ISBN: 1566895561
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
A newborn’s absent face appears on the back of someone else’s head, a filmmaker goes to gruesome lengths to achieve the silence he’s after for his final scene, and a therapist begins, impossibly, to appear in a troubled patient's room late at night. In these stories of doubt, delusion, and paranoia, no belief, no claim to objectivity, is immune to the distortions of human perception. Here, self-deception is a means of justifying our most inhuman impulses—whether we know it or not.

Redefining EU Membership

Redefining EU Membership PDF Author:
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192671731
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 393

Book Description
Redefining EU Membership examines the issue of Membership within the European Union (EU) today by focusing on differentiation in and outside the EU. The Treaty on European Union unequivocally declares that the contracting parties are the Member States of the EU. However, a closer examination casts some doubt of the unitary status of Member States, or at least suggests that the concept requires nuancing. Whilst diversity, and to some extent differentiation, have been part and parcel of the European integration process since its inception, Redefining EU Membership proposes that, considering several developments, a new reflection on membership within the EU and on differentiation in and outside the EU is required. The volume's contributions are organized around four aspects of the tensions faced by the concept of a unitary and formal EU membership: first, an examination of key policy areas which have already witnessed various forms of differentiated integration; second, an analysis of 'special statuses' within the EU; third, important examples of non-Member States in which EU law is applied (with and without their participation in the EU's decision-making process); and fourth, the situation of states under accession or secession procedures which obliges them to accept EU norms and policies even prior to/after formal membership. These analyses are complemented by a reflection on the concept of membership in itself. In a context in which EU enlargement appears likely, the provided analysis reflects on the need to expand and introduce several kinds of membership to the EU in the future.

Paintner offers a flexible format to reflect on Mary's titles through a thirty-one-day personal retreat, a series of novenas, or with visio divina exercises using striking images by printmaker Kreg Yingst. As you reflect on Mary in her role as Mother of Good Counsel, Woman Clothed with the Sun, Mystical Rose, Mother of Sorrows, Queen of the Angels, and other titles, Paintner invites you to hear what God calls you to develop in your life, help that dream or vision grow, and then nourish it in the world.
