The Unpublished Legends of Virgil
Author: Charles Godfrey Leland
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Folklore
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
All classic scholars are familiar with the Legends of Virgil in the Middle Ages, in which the poet appears as a magician, the last and best collection of these being that which forms the second volume of "Virgilio nel Medio Aevo," by Senatro Professor Domenico Comparetti. But having conjectured that Danta must have made Virgil familiar to the people, and that many legends or traditions still remained to be collected, I applied myself to this task, with the result that in due time I gathered, or had gathered for me, about one hundred tales, of which only three or four had a plot in common with the old Neapolitan Virgilian stories, and even these contained original and very curious additional lore. One half of these traditions will be found in this work. -- Preface.

The Opinion System
Author: Kirk Wetters
Publisher: Fordham Univ Press
ISBN: 0823229882
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 311
Book Description
"This book revises the concept of the public sphere by examining opinion as a foundational concept of modernity. Indispensable to ideas like "public opinion" and "freedom of opinion," opinion - though often held in dubious repute - here assumes a central position in modern philosophy, literature, sociology, and political theory. Kirk Wetters focuses on interpretive shifts begun in the Enlightenment and cemented by the French Revolution to restore the concept of "opinion" to a central role in our understanding of the political public sphere." "Addressing an intriguing range of thinkers, some little known to an American readership, Wetters argues that the transformations wrought by opinion are resisted by literary language, which opposes the rigid formalism that compels individuals to identify with their opinions. Rather than forcing thought to bind itself to stable opinions, modern literary forms seek to suspend this moment of closure, so that held opinions do not bring all deliberative processes to a standstill."--BOOK JACKET.
