Book Description
Excerpt from The University of Chicago, Vol. 6: The University Record (New Series) You have been given parchments reciting the action of the University of Chicago in bestowing on you the respective degrees to which you are entitled. In the Latin formulas you will find that you are granted all the rights and privileges of those academic degrees. I now call your attention to the converse of those rights and privileges - the obligations which you now incur. We hear much of rights but too little of the correlative obligations. Remember that every right, whether in accordance with the law of the land or of those still more fundamental moral laws which are vital to all political and social structure, carries with it a duty which the individual owes society, quite as much as society owes respect of individual rights. With each new right and privilege, therefore, you at once come under the obligation of a new duty. By virtue of your degrees you are admitted to the great body of our citizens who have enjoyed the benefit of college life or of professional training. In a certain sense, therefore, you belong to a body selected from their fellows by special opportunities. Accordingly, while you rest under all the common obligations of citizenship, you also are under special obligations incumbent on all who have had such opportunities. I charge you always to remember what you owe to Alma Mater. This obligation is not discharged by cheers in a crowd of ones fellows, still less in later life by contributions from one's abundance. The Grand Scribe's Records

The Grand Scribe's Records PDF Author: Qian Sima
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 9780253340221
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
This second volume of the ongoing annotated translation of Ssu-ma Ch'ien's Shi chi(The Grand Scribe's Records), widely acknowledged as the most important early Chinese history, contains the "basic annals" of five early Han-dynasty emperors. The annals trace the first century of Han rule (206 BC to ca. 100 BC) in a year-by-year account that focuses on imperial activities. In The Grand Scribe's Records, Ssu-ma Ch'ien revitalised the style of the annals he had written for previous rulers. Here are accounts of the peasant who founded the dynasty, Liu Pang, a man noted as much for his licentiousness as he was his ruthless political instinct, and of his cruel wife, Empress Lÿ, who murdered her chief rival for Liu Pang's affections in the most gruesome manner. The annals of two relatively undistinguished emperors follow. The volume concludes with Ssu-ma's depiction of perhaps the greatest ruler of the Han, Emperor Wu, told within the context of his delusive attempts to find a means to achieve immortality. When completed this translation will bring all 130 chapters of the Shih chi into English. Volumes 1 and 7 were published by Indiana University Press in 1994.

The University Record, Vol. 6 PDF Author: University Of North Carolina

Book Description
Excerpt from The University Record, Vol. 6: October, 1900 The creative side of the University has been shown by many lectures and addresses all over the State, hundreds of articles in the periodicals and a number of books of an educational charac ter. I think that this brief outline is sufficient to prove the position taken by me that this Uni versity has been a great factor in the education al development of the State. Let us again look at the matter from the side of dollars and cents. What sort of a financial investment has this been for the State? Even a brief examination will show that no other investment has paid the State so well. If we consider that fifty students a year have remained in the State who would other wise have gone beyond its bounds for their edu cation, and that fifteen have been drawn to the State - very moderate estimates, both of them then these two elements alone mean a balance over all appropriations from the State, of $175, 000 for the twenty-five years. Add to this 8125 000 in gifts of money and in buildings and we have a sum total of -a grand return for the meagre appropriations - the smallest ap propriation given by any Southern State to its University.
