Excerpt from The United Church of the United States It has been becoming evident to many thoughtful observers that the chief Christian problem of our age is the Reunion of Christendom, and that the most favorable conditions for its solution are found in this New World, where the churches and denominations of the Old World have become compacted together within a new political environment, yet with perfect freedom of action and intercourse. The growth of public interest in the question during the past ten years has been surprising. If the present volume have no higher value, it may serve to mark the course of opinion in this new direction, and to afford some outlook for the future. It contains the results not only of private study, but of conference with representative thinkers holding all the possible views in respect to the problem of American Church Unity. The interest of the writer in the subject dates as far back as the year 1862, when he published a Manual of Worship in the United States Army and Navy, compiled from ancient liturgies and modern formularies, and jointly recommended by eminent clergymen of all denominations. This was followed in 1864 by his edition of the Book of Common Prayer, as amended by the Presbyterian Divines in the Royal Commission of 1661, and as designed, with other more special objects, "to increase the spirit of catholicity and fraternity among such Churches of the Reformation as originally contributed to the formation of the Prayer-book, by restoring to more general use those liturgical formulas which are their several production or common inheritance and, next to the Holy Scriptures, the closest visible bonds of their unity." In sending forth that portion which treats of the American Church, it may be difficult to convince some of my readers of the propriety of calling the Protestant Episcopal Church the National Church of America. Strictly speaking, there has not been for many years any religious body in the United States which could, either from recognition by law and custom or from numerical predominance, claim to be the National Church. But when it is remembered that in the beginning, what is popularly known as the Episcopal Church was by charter and law established in the older colonies; that more than any other ecclesiastical organisation she had to do with constituting the nation, and, in the period of the Civil War, with its maintenance and reunion; and that, while conservative and Catholic in her character, she yet is distinctively American in spirit - there would seem to be ample justification for thus using the title American Church. Excerpt from Historical Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States It was found, however, that at least one publication of this order was already in existence, and upon reflection and consultation he was induced to change his plan, and to prepare a volume consisting mainly of historical sketches illustrative of the history of the Reformed Church from the days of the Reformation down to the present time. Some of these sketches were, at the time of their composition, printed in "The Guardian," a monthly magazine of which the author is editor, and though not strictly consecutive they are inserted in deference to the wishes of partial friends. In its present farm the book is intended to serve a double purpose. While it furnishes reading for the family, it also claims to be useful as a book of reference by enabling the reader to trace the career of individual ministers and the chronological order of the meetings of ecclesiastical bodies. In the preparation of Book I., which relates to the Church in Europe, the writer has by preference consulted works whose authors have been members of the Reformed Church. Excerpt from History of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ The desire for a new history first found official expression in a resolution adopted by the General Conference of 1889, authorizing the publisher and trustees of the Publishing House to secure its preparation. No one being found who was willing to take up what seemed a rather formidable responsibility, the quadrennium passed without a beginning being made, and the General Conference of 1893 renewed the action of 1889. Under this authority, in May, 1894, the present writer was appointed to undertake the work. The task was accepted with a full sense of the responsibility involved, but with the hope that in due time it might be accomplished. He began early to make preparation for the work, collecting materials through extensive correspondence and from all other available sources. Excerpt from A History of the Congregational Churches: In the United States Congregationalism has always inclined to publication, and the number of works really germane to the history of the denomination is enormous and constantly increasing. The connection of the body with the settlement of New England and the opening up of the West has led to some treatment of the features of this story by almost every writer on the beginnings of the northern United States, and the intimacy which marked the relationship of the Congregational churches to the civil governments during much of their American life renders town and colonial histories, legislative records, and even personal journals scarcely less sources of religious than of secular history. Fortunately for the student of Congregationalism, a bibliography of works in any way related to the theme was prepared by the late Rev. Dr. Henry M.Dexter, and published in his "Congregationalism of the last Three Hundred Years" (New York, Harper Brothers, 1880). This magnificent list, the result of years of investigation, extends from 1546 to 1879, and embraces 7250 titles. Yet even this is not exhaustive, and a complete bibliography, brought down to 1894, would probably include at least 8000 works which might justly be claimed to illustrate the story of Congregationalism more or less directly. The present writer, in his "Creeds and Platforms of Congregationalism" (New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1893), has given extended bibliographies of the leading Congregational symbols and of the discussions out of which they have grown. No one library includes all Congregational literature; but the student will find large collections in the possession of the Congregational Library at Boston, of Yale University (Dr. Dexter's own library), of the Massachusetts Historical Society or of the Public Library (Prince Library) at Boston, and of the American Antiquarian Society at Worcester. Smaller collections of value are those of the Connecticut Historical Society at Hartford, of Andover Theological Seminary, and of Union Theological Seminary.
