Following Sexual Abuse

Following Sexual Abuse PDF Author: Marie C. Croll
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442692480
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
Sexual abuse is a subject that has received and continues to attract a considerable amount of scholarly attention. However, most studies tend to treat sexual abuse as strictly personal and isolated suffering. Following Sexual Abuse attempts to develop a broader perspective on this important issue via narrated accounts of women’s experiences. It is a sociological investigation that looks at the connection between the intra-personal and social worlds of victims as revealed through reflexive therapy. Marie C. Croll explores the transformational space between intra-personal and social experiences of self, a dual perspective that allows room for both personal and collective experiences to enter into a discussion of sexual abuse and its effects. She argues that private and public interpretations need to be considered together as their influences on the individual are inseparable. Using individual case studies, Croll demonstrates the extent to which variable public perspectives on sexual abuse come to define victims’ relationships to their own accounts. Following Sexual Abuse offers vital sociological insights and contributes a necessary intra-personal vantage point to the experience of sexual abuse and reflexive therapy.

Book Description
'Every Sound There Is': Revolver and the Transformation of Rock and Roll assesses and celebrates the Beatles' accomplishment in their 1966 masterpiece. The essays of Every Sound There Is examine Revolver from a large number of complementary starting points that help us to understand both the album's contemporary creation and reception and the ways in which it continues to shape the creation and reception of popular music in the twenty-first century. Responding to the incredible diversity of Revolver, this gathering of international scholars focuses on the Beatles' 1966 album as one of rock and roll history's threshold moments. Bringing to bear approaches from the disciplines of musicology, cultural studies, poetics, gender studies, these essays address matters as diverse as the influence of American R&B on Revolver as well as its influence on Pink Floyd, each Beatle‘s contributions to the album, the musicological significance of the Beatles' harmonies and chord progressions, its status and coherence as a work of art, the technological and marketing significance of Revolver's recording and distribution, and its influence on the development of rock music.

Memory, Voice, and Identity

Memory, Voice, and Identity PDF Author: Feroza Jussawalla
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000367312
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Muslim women have been stereotyped by Western academia as oppressed and voiceless. This volume problematizes this Western academic representation. Muslim Women Writers from the Middle East from Out al-Kouloub al-Dimerdashiyyah (1899–1968) and Latifa al-Zayat (1923–1996) from Egypt, to current diasporic writers such as Tamara Chalabi from Iraq, Mohja Kahf from Syria, and even trendy writers such as Alexandra Chreiteh, challenge the received notion of Middle Eastern women as subjugated and secluded. The younger largely Muslim women scholars collected in this book present cutting edge theoretical perspectives on these Muslim women writers. This book includes essays from the conflict-ridden countries such as Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, and the resultant diaspora. The strengths of Muslim women writers are captured by the scholars included herein. The approach is feminist, post-colonial, and disruptive of Western stereotypical academic tropes.
