The Ugly Mug: and Other Stories

The Ugly Mug: and Other Stories PDF Author: Darren Todd
Publisher: Kat-Berger Publications
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
With more than forty publications, Darren Todd's short stories have peppered the horror, sci-fi, and literary scene for the last fifteen years. For the first time, several of his previously published works have come together in a single collection, The Ugly Mug, with tales hand-picked by the author and the original story, "The Hounds of Hellville," written just for this volume. Todd elevates genre short fiction beyond entertainment. Whether it's the titular story of a haunted mug driving the new office hire mad, or a worrisome look at the near future, where the guilty simply hire someone to do their prison time, these stories will challenge as much as engage. So be ready to worry, to laugh, to cringe, to wonder. To feel the warm tingle of vindication for the wicked while still casting down your eyes for the ill-fated and forgotten. Dive in until the surface grows dim above you, for there's treasure to find.

The Mantle and Other Stories

The Mantle and Other Stories PDF Author: Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol
Publisher: Library of Alexandria
ISBN: 1465591435
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
As a novel-writer and a dramatist, Gogol appears to me to deserve a minute study, and if the knowledge of Russian were more widely spread, he could not fail to obtain in Europe a reputation equal to that of the best English humorists. A delicate and close observer, quick to detect the absurd, bold in exposing, but inclined to push his fun too far, Gogol is in the first place a very lively satirist. He is merciless towards fools and rascals, but he has only one weapon at his disposalÑirony. This is a weapon which is too severe to use against the merely absurd, and on the other hand it is not sharp enough for the punishment of crime; and it is against crime that Gogol too often uses it. His comic vein is always too near the farcical, and his mirth is hardly contagious. If sometimes he makes his reader laugh, he still leaves in his mind a feeling of bitterness and indignation; his satires do not avenge society, they only make it angry. As a painter of manners, Gogol excels in familiar scenes. He is akin to Teniers and Callot. We feel as though we had seen and lived with his characters, for he shows us their eccentricities, their nervous habits, their slightest gestures. One lisps, another mispronounces his words, and a third hisses because he has lost a front tooth. Unfortunately Gogol is so absorbed in this minute study of details that he too often forgets to subordinate them to the main action of the story. To tell the truth, there is no ordered plan in his works, andÑa strange trait in an author who sets up as a realistÑhe takes no care to preserve an atmosphere of probability. His most carefully painted scenes are clumsily connectedÑthey begin and end abruptly; often the author's great carelessness in construction destroys, as though wantonly, the illusion produced by the truth of his descriptions and the naturalness of his conversations.

Kharshouf and other Stories

Kharshouf and other Stories PDF Author: Jack Debney
Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1784624225
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
An atmospheric collection of 5 stories, all with vivid characterisation and a strong sense of place. Three of the stories included in this collection feature the character Jim Skaife, who has appeared in the author’s earlier works. In ‘Tracking’ we see him as a young boy in a northern town, exploring friendships and the dark, bombed-out slums. In ‘The Wooden Ship’ we return to Jim’s infancy and a unloved gift given by a German POW. The eponymous story ‘Kharshouf’ features our central character as he reminisces about his time in Alexandria – an experience he has shared with the author. ‘Artichoke is an Arabic word originally: kharshouf,’ our guest had explained at the beginning of his stay. ‘And when Mr Khrushchev, the Russian leader but not for much longer, came to Egypt in 1964, people started nicknaming him “Kharshouf” - not because he resembled one all that spectacularly but because of the similar sounds to the words. It made you look at politics in a different way when you realised that the world could be blown to bits by an artichoke!’ Jack is influenced by writers as diverse as Graham Greene and Wilkie Collins.A sequence infused with a northern ambience, a strong setting and the characters battle against adverse circumstances and survive.
