On Creation and Evolution: The debate about creation and evolution is fair game. What is not fair is the efforts of one side to silence the rights of the other to their beliefs and opinions, a wrong historically committed by both sides. On Homosexuality: Let the debate continue, but let it be infused with truthfulness instead of lies, starting with the scientific fact that people are not born gay. On Suicide: There, in the middle of the gray, dead cement basement room, a boy hangs from a floor joist above by a length of shipping strapping, its length stretched to its limit, its form cut deeply into the boy's neck...We learn later he was bullied at school. On Faith: All the arguments in the world for or against Christ don't matter... It all comes down to this; either you want to believe or you don't. And then you live your life accordingly. Readers of Andrew McIntosh's regular op-ed columns in The Californian-a San Diego area daily newspaper-will instantly recognize the witty, biting prose he uses to drive his points home in his first book, The Two Suggestions. Teens and parents will deeply relate to McIntosh's personal and professional experiences as he shares his orphanage and adoption story, his big city paramedic career, and his various youth advocacy experiences spanning several decades. The Two Suggestions should be mandatory reading for every teenager, parent and youth advocate in America and Canada today. In the new America-secular, immoral, addicted and violent-The Two Suggestions offers today's youth powerful tools to thrive in the face of confusion, anger and social chaos.

The Two Greatest Ideas

The Two Greatest Ideas PDF Author: Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691211248
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
Two simple yet tremendously powerful ideas that shaped virtually every aspect of civilization This book is a breathtaking examination of the two greatest ideas in human history. The first is the idea that the human mind can grasp the universe. The second is the idea that the human mind can grasp itself. Acclaimed philosopher Linda Zagzebski shows how the first unleashed a cultural awakening that swept across the world in the first millennium BCE, giving birth to philosophy, mathematics, science, and virtually all the major world religions. It dominated until the Renaissance, when the discovery of subjectivity profoundly transformed the arts and sciences. This second great idea governed our perception of reality up until the dawn of the twenty-first century. Zagzebski explores how the interplay of the two ideas led to conflicts that have left us ambivalent about the relationship between the mind and the universe, and have given rise to a host of moral and political rifts over the deepest questions human beings face. Should we organize civil society around the ideal of living in harmony with the world or that of individual autonomy? Zagzebski explains how the two greatest ideas continue to divide us today over issues such as abortion, the environment, free speech, and racial and gender identity. This panoramic book reveals what is missing in our conception of ourselves and the world, and imagines a not-too-distant future when a third great idea, the idea that human minds can grasp each other, will help us gain an idea of the whole of reality.

An Improved Suggestion in Stratified Random Sampling Using Two Auxiliary Variables

An Improved Suggestion in Stratified Random Sampling Using Two Auxiliary Variables PDF Author: Rajesh Singh
Publisher: Infinite Study
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 11

Book Description
In this paper, we suggest an estimator using two auxiliary variables in stratified random sampling following Malik and Singh [12]. The propose estimator has an improvement over mean per unit estimator as well as some other considered estimators. Expressions for bias and MSE of the estimator are derived up to first degree of approximation. Moreover, these theoretical findings are supported by a numerical example with original data.

The University of Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma PDF Author: David W. Levy
Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press
ISBN: 0806181931
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
This book, the first in a projected three-volume definitive history, traces the University’s progress from territorial days to 1917. David W. Levy examines the people and events surrounding the school’s formation and development, chronicling the determined ambition of pioneers to transform a seemingly barren landscape into a place where a worthy institution of higher education could thrive. The University of Oklahoma was established by the territorial legislature in 1890. With that act, Norman became the educational center of the future state. Levy captures the many factors—academic, political, financial, religious—that shaped the University. Drawing on a great depth of research in primary documents, he depicts the University’s struggles to meet its goals as it confronted political interference, financial uncertainty, and troubles ranging from disastrous fires to populist witch hunts. Yet he also portrays determined teachers and optimistic students who understood the value of a college education. Written in an engaging style and enhanced by an array of historical photographs, this volume is a testimony to the citizens who overcame formidable obstacles to build a school that satisfied their ambitions and embodied their hopes for the future.
