Detailed flow field measurements were performed to investigate the development of the three-dimensional wall jet, the effect of initial conditions on the development of wall jets and the evolution of the large-scale vortex structures that causes the large lateral growth rate in the flow. Single-point measurements in the wall jet exiting a contoured nozzle indicated that there were two regions in the intermediate field 10 & le; x/D & le; 40. The flow underwent a significant change in the region 10 & le; x/D & le; 20 as it adjusted to the wall. The changes of the profiles of the moments and the reorientation of the regions of the mean streamwise vorticity slowed down in the region beyond x/D = 20 and were not apparent by x/D = 40. The comparison of measurements of wall jets exiting the contoured nozzle and the fully developed long pipe indicated that changes in initial conditions do affect the jet half-widths and the decay of the maximum streamwise velocity through near and intermediate fields. The differences in growth rates of wall jets, profiles of moments and contours of the mean streamwise vorticity in the two jets were reduced in the region after x/D = 10 and were not apparent in the region beyond x/D = 20 & ndash;30. Measurements of two-point, two-time correlation of the streamwise fluctuating velocity indicated that the large-scale vortex structures that consist two pair of horseshoe vortices in the flow continued to develop throughout the intermediate field. In particular, the inner vortex structures were induced towards the wall by the outer structures and the legs of the outer structures inclined relative to the streamwise direction as the flow evolved downstream. Measurements also indicated that the flow below the outer region of the streamwise vorticity was laterally convected faster than the outer vortex structures.

A method for calculating the growth of a turbulent wall jet in streaming flow was developed. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional, incompressible and over a plane, smooth wall. Downstream variations of pressure are permitted and separation in an adverse pressure gradient may be predicted. The method incorporates procedures for matching the flow to that at the blowing slot, although it is postulated that the upstream boundary layer there is thin enough that the wall jet develops without an unmixed wake (i.e. there is not a minimum in the mean-velocity profile). The method incorporates four integral momentum equations taken from the wall to various points in the flow. The calculation of the outer shearing stress, although empirical, is based on the large-eddy equilibrium hypothesis and therefore has some foundation. The remaining empiricism in the method is based on measurements in self-preserving wall jets. The method was used to predict the jet-momentum coefficient required to suppress separation over a trailing-edge flap attached to a thin aerofoil. Plausible curves have been obtained using assumed values of upstream boundary layer at the slot. (Author).

The author's first monograph on turbulent jets, in 1936, dealt solely with a free submerged jet. Since that time, the theory of the turbulent jet has been developed in many published works both in the USSR and abroad: it has been enriched with a large amount of experimental material and has been applied in many new fields of engineering. In the last 10 years very substantial progress has been made, and it has now become possible to go beyond the free submerged jet and to solve the problem of a jet in a stream of fluid, to take into account the interaction between the jet and solid walls, to ascertain the relationship between the contour of the jet and the ratio of its density to the density of the surrounding medium, and to establish the characteristic features of a supersonic jet. This monograph contains the results of further research by the author and his colleagues, as well as a critical reappraisal of the more important theoretical and experimental data published by other investigators. The first section deals with the theory of a turbulent jet of incompressible fluid. It gives a systematic analysis of numerous experimental data on velocity profiles, temperature, and the impurity concentration, as well as the outlines of the turbulent mixing lone. The second section sets forth the theory of turbulent gas jets, including strongly preheated and supersonic jets. The theory of free turbulence in a gas, suitable in principle for any degree of compressibility, is revised, and the equations are derived for motion and heat exchange in the boundary layer of a jet at very high temperature. The third section solves several problems of the spreading of jets in finite and semifinite space, and the fourth section describes various applications of the theory of jets, many of which are reported for the first time or have been significantly revised.
