Book Description
Excerpt from The True Church: A Study (Historical and Scriptural) This book is but an argument. It makes no pre tense to furnish information concerning The Church, which may be found in such admirable works as those of Hatch and Hort and T. M. Lindsay, representing the evangelic notion Of The Church; or the more recent works Of Darwell Stone and Durell, represent ing the anglo-catholic opinion. The substance of the book was given as lectures to the students Of the Auburn Theological Seminary and it is published to meet in some measure the need Of any who may wish to see some of the facts concerning The Church arranged so as to be better able to answer sophistical questions such as, who has authority to give sacred bread (a. J. Mason); and the constantly reiterated statement that in order to have authority from above a minister must be in supposed apostolic succession. It is a criticism of the catholic position Of which Gore and Moberly have been such ardent defenders, that The Church has been from the beginning a society with a divinely appointed succession of those who are in holy orders. The author feels that the churches are in danger to day Of returning to an ecclesiasticism which has, in the past, limited Christian liberty and corrupted Christian service. The Straight Path

The Straight Path PDF Author: Michael J. Phelan
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330977880
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
Excerpt from The Straight Path: Or Marks of the True Church This little work is conceived in no controversial spirit; for since controversy begets bad temper more often than conviction, the idea remotest from the writer's mind would be to awaken that profitless and unholy spirit. If, then, comparisons are instituted between the Catholic Church and other Christian bodies, the reader must bear in mind that this is done with no purpose of disrespect, but simply and solely because the exigencies of the argument demand it. Were these comparisons omitted, the reasoning would be incomplete, and halt, when it should lead to a definite conclusion. The purpose of the book is a modest one - namely, to serve as a clear, and possibly an interesting, exposition of some points of Catholic teaching. The True Church of Christ, Exoteric and Esoteric (Classic Reprint)

The True Church of Christ, Exoteric and Esoteric (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: J. W. Brodie-Innes
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330881163
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
Excerpt from The True Church of Christ, Exoteric and Esoteric The origin of the first appearance of these papers in the pages of Lucifer was to attempt to correct misconceptions. Writers of great ability and honesty were often found to postulate as Church doctrines things which had never been and never could be taught by the Church, though they might have been enunciated by persons ostensibly members of the Church, but over whom the Church could have no control; the false teaching and evil lives of professing Christians in all ages were ascribed to Christianity, which should be ascribed to professing Christians who were not really such. The evidences of this position are mostly in voluminous and somewhat difficult works, not easy of access to the generality, and hardly likely to be familiar to the average man who is not a member of the Church, while of manuals there are many, and few trustworthy, since they mostly seek to support a particular view, and are characterized rather by bold assertion and rhetorical disquisition than by a statement of evidence and logical deduction therefrom. To the bulk of non-Christians, or of Christians who are not members of the Church, it is hopeless to speak; but Theosophists by the mere fact of being such must hold that "There is no Religion higher than Truth."
