Book Description
Excerpt from The Trinummus of T. Maccius Plautus: Translated Into Literal English, With Notes This translation being intended for the "General" Examination, my object has been to translate as literally as is compatible with fair English. The notes are merely such as are necessary for the explanation of the translation itself, not of the Latin; Where words are supplied, I have pointed it out in the foot-notes, instead of bracketing the introduced phrase in the text: and I have occasionally inserted such words as "Now" "since" &c. at the beginning of a sentence, without noticing it. I have not thought it necessary to translate "edepol" "pol" &c. "by Pollux," but have tried to suit the rendering of the interjection to the sense of the passage. Reading Roman Comedy

Reading Roman Comedy PDF Author: Alison Sharrock
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139482645
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
For many years the domain of specialists in early Latin, in complex metres, and in the reconstruction of texts, Roman comedy is now established in the mainstream of Classical literary criticism. Where most books stress the original performance as the primary location for the encountering of the plays, this book finds the locus of meaning and appreciation in the activity of a reader, albeit one whose manner of reading necessarily involves the imaginative reconstruction of performance. The texts are treated, and celebrated, as literary devices, with programmatic beginnings, middles, ends, and intertexts. All the extant plays of Plautus and Terence have at least a bit part in this book, which seeks to expose the authors' fabulous artificiality and artifice, while playing along with their differing but interrelated poses of generic humility.

Cultural Translation in Early Modern Europe

Cultural Translation in Early Modern Europe PDF Author: Peter Burke
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139462636
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 21

Book Description
This groundbreaking 2007 volume gathers an international team of historians to present the practice of translation as part of cultural history. Although translation is central to the transmission of ideas, the history of translation has generally been neglected by historians, who have left it to specialists in literature and language. This book seeks to achieve an understanding of the contribution of translation to the spread of information in early modern Europe. It focuses on non-fiction: the translation of books on religion, history, politics and especially on science, or 'natural philosophy', as it was generally known at this time. The chapters cover a wide range of languages, including Latin, Greek, Russian, Turkish and Chinese. The book will appeal to scholars and students of the early modern and later periods, to historians of science and of religion, as well as to anyone interested in translation studies.
