We Begin in Gladness

We Begin in Gladness PDF Author: Craig Morgan Teicher
Publisher: Graywolf Press
ISBN: 1555978215
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
One of our most perceptive critics on the ways that poets develop poems, a career, and a life Though it seems, at first, like an art of speaking, poetry is an art of listening. The poet trains to hear clearly and, as much as possible, without interruption, the voice of his or her mind, the voice that gathers, packs with meaning, and unpacks the language he or she knows. It can take a long time to learn to let this voice speak without getting in its way. This slow learning, the growth of this habit of inner attentiveness, is poetic development, and it is the substance of the poet’s art. Of course, this growth is rarely steady, never linear, and is sometimes not actually growth but diminishment—that’s all part of the compelling story of a poet’s way forward. —from the Introduction “The staggering thing about a life’s work is it takes a lifetime to complete,” Craig Morgan Teicher writes in these luminous essays. We Begin in Gladness considers how poets start out, how they learn to hear themselves, and how some offer us that rare, glittering thing: lasting work. Teicher traces the poetic development of the works of Sylvia Plath, John Ashbery, Louise Glück, and Francine J. Harris, among others, to illuminate the paths they forged—by dramatic breakthroughs or by slow increments, and always by perseverance. We Begin in Gladness is indispensable for readers curious about the artistic life and for writers wondering how they might light out—or even scale the peak of the mountain.

Game Theory and Exercises PDF Author: Gisèle Umbhauer
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317362993
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 462

Book Description
Game Theory and Exercises introduces the main concepts of game theory, along with interactive exercises to aid readers’ learning and understanding. Game theory is used to help players understand decision-making, risk-taking and strategy and the impact that the choices they make have on other players; and how the choices of those players, in turn, influence their own behaviour. So, it is not surprising that game theory is used in politics, economics, law and management. This book covers classic topics of game theory including dominance, Nash equilibrium, backward induction, repeated games, perturbed strategie s, beliefs, perfect equilibrium, Perfect Bayesian equilibrium and replicator dynamics. It also covers recent topics in game theory such as level-k reasoning, best reply matching, regret minimization and quantal responses. This textbook provides many economic applications, namely on auctions and negotiations. It studies original games that are not usually found in other textbooks, including Nim games and traveller’s dilemma. The many exercises and the inserts for students throughout the chapters aid the reader’s understanding of the concepts. With more than 20 years’ teaching experience, Umbhauer’s expertise and classroom experience helps students understand what game theory is and how it can be applied to real life examples. This textbook is suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students who study game theory, behavioural economics and microeconomics.

The holy apostles, enlightened and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, carried the indescribable wealth of God's goodness into the whole universe: the Son of God, who came to the world in flesh, preached; faith in Him was planted in the hearts of men; they denied idoloress, peoples, darkened by the darkness of the ignorance of God, enlightened; the eyes of the heart blinded to the knowledge of the true God opened; founded the Church of God on the face of the whole earth; gathered a single blessed herd from different nations, like wild animals, gathered; The Holy Trinity — the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the one God — was taught to read; they lit the fire of God's love in the hearts of believers and affirmed the hope of life and the bliss of the next century, as it is written about them: they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. The Trembling Flu

The Trembling Flu PDF Author: Kuberski
Publisher: Dog Ear Publishing
ISBN: 1457502429
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
ABOUT THE NOVEL: "The Trembling Flu" is a fictional novel based on several diverse real life Infectious Disease events that occurred during the last half century. In this novel there are three stories woven together into a bioterrorism theme. The first deals with a mysterious disease found in the wilds of Papua New Guinea. The second is a failed influenza virus vaccination program that took place during Gerald Ford's tenure as President. The third integrates solving the medical mystery in New Guinea with a misguided attempt to prevent a repeat of the devastating 1918 pandemic of influenza A. In turn, these events result in a successful bioterrorism plot with gruesome consequences. The author lived through some of the real life events and is able to illustrate the highs and lows of the Infectious Diseases specialty going from a Nobel Prize in Medicine, to a major vaccine disaster, to a miracle cure of an unusual infection. The plot revolves around the influenza vaccine and how it can be influenced by politics, pharmaceutical companies and overzealous public health officials who lose perspective because of their obsession with the disease influenza. The novel presents viewpoints on the deficiencies of the influenza vaccine which are seldom heard by the unsuspecting public.
