Book Description
The book opens with the current life events in the character of Frank Armour. He is a wealthy English gentleman currently in Canada working for the Hudson Bay Company. He was engaged in England to be married to a young lady of whom his parents were not in favor, since she was from a poor family, and he is admired by a much wealthier young woman. However, both these engagements are ended suddenly by mail from England and Mr. Armour has since become engaged to a young Indian woman. This is a situation that is most certainly not approved, and it does reveal the typical attitudes of that time toward non-whites.
