Book Description
Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, 1915, Vol. 18 It is not known to whom the isolation of zinc is due but it was mentioned by Paracelsus(1493-1541). In 1721 Henckle published his discovery of the fact that it could be obtained from calamine, and he is named by Beckman as the first to intentionally carry out the process. It seems quite certain that zinc was made in the East at a much earlier date, but authorities differ as to whether China or India was the birthplace of the process. The earliest attempt seems to have been the production of brass by the cementation of calamine ore (silicate of zinc), with native copper. Later metallic zinc, or spelter, was made, and about 1740 the art was introduced into England. In 1798 it was introduced into Silesia, Germany, by Ruhberg, (who went to England to learn about it), and into Carinthia, Austria, about the same time by Dillinger. The production of spelter in Belgium began with the experiments of Abbe Daniel Dony in 1780. Dony was an experienced chemist, whose success was finally achieved accidentally after a long series of disappointing results. While endeavouring to extract zinc from calamine by fusion, in a reverberatory furnace, it occurred to him that the heat applied was not sufficiently high and he added coal dust to the mineral to attain a higher temperature. In order to observe what took place in the interior of his furnace, he built an ordinary fiower-pot into one side to serve as a peep-hole through which he could watch the operation. The furnace having been charged and the firing begun, drops of zinc were observed to condense on the inside of the flower pot, which was cooler than the furnace itself. The method of extracting the metal by distillation was thus discovered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, 1918, Vol. 21: With Which Is Incorporated the Transactions of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia In submitting its Annual Report upon the work and business of the Institute for the year ending December 31, 1917, the Council is gratified to record that the affairs of the Institute are in a very satisfactory condition. Despite-the fact. That there has been a considerable loss of revenue consequent on the exemption from fees of members serving with the colours, the financial position of the Institute is unimpaired. This is owing chiefly to the efforts of the 'membership Committee, ' appointed by Council, who succeeded in influencing a large increase in the membership during the year. In this connection thanks are due in particular to Mr. E. E. Campbell, Mr. J. E. Murphy, Mr. J. T. Stirling, Mr. J. H. Stovel, and Mr. Geo. Wilkinson for their zealous and devoted labours. The publications of the Institute were also considerably greater in bulk than in any previous year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, 1916, Vol. 19 To put it brie y, the boy, having dissolved soap in water, holds a little of it in the bowl of his clay pipe while he blows through the stem. The soapy water forms a film that is distended by the boy's warm breath into a lovely sphere, which is lighter than the surrounding air and therefore rises, while the sunshine undergoes refraction into the colours Of the spectrum. When the boy blows through his pipe into pure water, he makes bubbles likewise, but they break instantly. It is the soap that lengthens their life. In the language of physics we say that high 'surface tension' causes the pure-water bubbles to burst immediately, while the addition of soap introduces a contaminant that lowers the tension so as to enable the bubbles to last longer.
