Book Description
Excerpt from The Tides of Barnegat One lovely spring morning - and this story begins on a spring morning some fifty years or more ago - a joy of a morning that made one glad to be alive, when the radiant sunshine had turned the ribbon of a road that ran from Warehold village to Barnegat Light and the sea to satin, the wide marshes to velvet, and the belts of stunted pines to bands of purple - on this spring morning, then, Martha Sands, the Cobdens' nurse, was out with her dog Meg. She had taken the little beast to the inner beach for a bath - a custom of hers when the weather was fine and the water not too cold - and was returning to Warehold by way of the road, when, calling the dog to her side, she stopped to feast her eyes on the picture unrolled at her feet. Book Description
Excerpt from Kasba (White Partridge): A Story of Hudson Bay I run always regarded the writing of prefaces to be, for the most part, work thrown away; neverthe less, I am tempted to prefix a few words to this novel, in the form of a note, in order to defend myself against charges which may possibly be made against meby theeritics, andtowhichl mayheunahleto revert after they shall have been preferred. It may bosaid, inthefirst place, thstsllthe charactersin this story speak ordinary English, which I admit. The natural language of the natives is, of some, the tongue of their race, Chipewyan or Eskimo, as the case may be, but in order that the reader might understand it, a translation was necessary. Since this was the case, why not have the translation in good English, instead of in pigeon-english, which no one properly understands and which is misleading and equally untrue to life? Then, again, my descrip tion of Chesterfield Inlet may he found fault with, and with good reason, for I have written of trees where no trees exist. Chesterfield Inlet is in the barren lands, as most people know. But a wooded district was necessary to my plot, and in describing the country I have changed the topography to suit the requirements of my story. And now, as a last. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sea: Sketches of a Voyage to Hudson's Bay; And Other Poems The poems now offered to the public have neither the charm of romantic narrative, nor the zest of humorous description, to recommend them to the general reader. Yet, if their perusal will afford any gratification to more reflective minds, the author will consider that he has not laboured in vain. He has hesitated too long, and has been too cautious of submitting himself to the ordeal of criticism, to feel much disappointed at a failure now; more especially as he does not come forward as a professed litterateur. His productions are the results of a pleasing recreation in the intervals of the duties of another profession to which he has devoted himself for some years. Book Description
Excerpt from Tides I saw her pass to-day In Warwickshire, With the old imperial way, The old desire, Fresh as among those other flowers they More beautiful for Adon's discontent. Those other years she made Her festival When the blue eggs were laid And lambs were tall, By the Athenian rivers while the reeds Made love melodious for the Ganymedes. And now through Cantlow brakes, By Wilmcote hill, To Avon-side, she makes Her garlands still, And I who watch her flashing limbs am one With youth whose days three thousand years are done. A shower of green gems on my apple-tree This first morning of May Has fallen out of the night, to be Herald of holiday Bright gems of green that, fallen there, Seem fixed and glowing on the air.
