Book Description
High adventure on the roof of the world At the age of sixteen British author Talbot Mundy (William Lancaster Gribbon) ran away from home and travelled extensively through India, Africa, the Middle East and the Orient-an experience that stood him in good stead as he later crafted his bestselling novels. During this time he made his living as a petty criminal and confidence trickster. By the time he was twenty nine he had changed his name to Talbot Mundy, was living in the United States of America and had embarked on a writing career. He was well known as an author of novels with recurring characters and among his best known creations are Tros of Samothrace, Jimgrim and the principal character of the two novels in this Leonaur two-in-one edition-Lobsang Pun. 'The Most Reverend Lobsang Pun, ' known to all as 'Old Ugly Faces, ' is a mystical monk of venerable age, who lives in Tibet, a magical land of forbidden places and secret mountain fastnesses. 'The Thunder Dragon's Gate, ' the first novel here, is a high-spirited tale of heroic adventure featuring Tom Grayne and an audience pleasing fantastical creature or two for good measure. In 'Old Ugly Face, ' also featuring Tom Grayne, the Dalai Lama has died and the traditional search to find the new incarnation has begun, but Lobsang Pun intends to influence events in the interests of cosmic balance and world sanity. These high ideals are, of course, wrapped up in an absorbing story of love, jealousy, international intrigue, treachery, adversity and daring-do. This is an excellent opportunity for collectors to possess both Lobsang Pun novels in one substantial special edition. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Talbot Mundy, Philosopher of Adventure

Talbot Mundy, Philosopher of Adventure PDF Author: Brian Taves
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 078648442X
Category : Literary Criticism

Pages : 312

Book Description
This critical biography chronicles both the actual travels and the philosophical meanderings of Talbot Mundy, one of the pioneers of the fantasy and adventure genre. Less celebrated than his contemporaries Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad, Mundy was no less gifted when it came to the literary portrayal of faraway lands. He was one of the first Western writers to show an appreciation of Eastern culture, and his writing became an outlet for his radical ideas on religion and philosophy. At the age of sixteen, Mundy left his native England to begin his life of adventure--a journey that took him from India to the Middle East to Tibet and finally to America, which became his adopted home. The American spirit of adventure matched Mundy's own, and it was here that he found a true audience for his work. This book explores Mundy's oeuvre--much of it set in exotic locales through which he himself had traveled--and considers both his novels and his lesser known writing, as well as his film and radio work. Books such as Rung Ho!, King-of the Khyber Rifles, Caves of Terror, Purple Pirate and Tros of Samothrace are discussed and placed within the framework of Mundy's life and philosophy. The final chapter evaluates the enduring value of his writings. Appendices include a comprehensive list of Mundy's works and a chronological listing by their original publication dates.

Book Description
"Dragon's Gate is a superb book, a fascinating story written from the heart and woven into a complex cultural and historical tapestry - a modern classic in the making." - Robert Macklin, author of Dragon and Kangaroo Shi Ding is seventeen. In an attempt to impress a girl, he joins a local Red Guard unit and succeeds in having a nine-year-old boy arrested and a widowed professor of foreign literature driven to a shameful suicide. But when his father's death is also revealed as suicide, Shi Ding is expelled from the gang. He suspects there was more to the relationship between his father and the professor than friendship and he moves into her empty house. There he discovers a library of translations of forbidden Western classics. Himself a born storyteller, he is transfixed by the stories in these books by the likes of Dostoevsky, Stendhal, Hugo, Dickens, and Dumas … Set in China in the mid-60s, Dragon's Gate is about the power of storytelling. Within its overarching narrative, there are stories of little-known worlds: river logging in remote mountains, armed fighting between Red Guard factions, fortune telling on long train journeys, community life in the courtyards of Beijing hutong. Memorable characters abound in this rich and varied tale - characters like Sun Lanfen, the nosy, tough but decent residential compound leader; the blind singer who was struck dumb when he had to sing songs set to Chairman Mao's quotations; and the Buffalo Boy who was reputed to have fathered a hundred children in a Tibetan village. "The unique interweaving of fascinating tales set in exotic places with familiar and much loved western classics makes this book a page turner from beginning to end." - Jane Sydenham-Kwiet, German teacher and translator

Book Description
This is a bibliography of the works of the author Talbot Mundy (born William Lancaster Gribbon) compiled and edited by Bradford M. Day. Talbot Mundy was born in London in 1879. He served nearly ten years, beginning in 1900, as a government official in Africa and India. While in India, he wandered all over the sub-continent on horseback, and even into Tibet. Fascinated by Eastern occult lore, Mundy absorbed all he could learn of the Indian beliefs. Government service next brought him to Africa where his interest in folk tales on magic continued. Mundy also visited Australia, and Mexico as far south as Yucatan. He first arrived in the United States in 1911, and liked the country so much that he decided to stay and become a citizen. Mundy quickly turned his energies to writing, and an article, "Pig Sticking in India," was accepted and published in the April 1911 issue of Adventure Magazine. More articles soon followed. For years thereafter, Adventure had short stories, novelettes, novels, and serials by this master teller of tales in most of the issues that were printed.
