Likewise the enemies they are up against, the smoothly evil and calculating Richelieu; the seductive, brilliant hellcat that is Milady, a stronger female in literature nowhere to be found; and the dangerous Comte de Rochefort, a shadowy presence of malevolence. Built on the ridiculous, the humorous, the exciting, and deeply in the characters, this work creates a world of romance (in that oh-so-classic sense) and adventure which conscripts the reader and delivers him to the front lines. Many have been amazed by the book's ability to invoke lust, pity, wonder, respect, scorn, and hatred, all while driving along a plot filled with new events and characters. Alexandre Dumas (born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, 1802-1870), was a French playwright, novelist, essayist and magazine and travelogue writer. One of the most widely read French authors, his works have been translated into nearly 100 languages. Best known today for his historical adventure novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, his works, comprising some 100,000 pages, have been the basis for nearly 200 films. Dumas' father, a General born in Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) to a French nobleman and an African slave, used his aristocratic rank to help Alexandre secure a position with Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans. With the accession of Louis-Napoléon in 1851, Dumas fell out of favor, moving to Belgium for several years before relocating to Russia and then Italy before returning to Paris in 1864. The married Dumas carried on numerous affairs, perhaps with as many as forty different women, fathering at least four and possibly as many as seven illegitimate children, including a boy named after him. This son, a successful novelist and playwright, became known as Alexandre Dumas, fils (son), while the father became known as Alexandre Dumas, père (father). His last novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine, unfinished at his death, was completed by another writer and published in 2005, becoming a bestseller. In 2008 a translation was published in English as The Last Cavalier.

The Three Musketeers, a historical novel, is arranged in five parts. In the first, the introduction, the reader meets the heroes: the cadet, d'Artagnan, and the king's musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. They become the Inseparables. In the second part, the reader discovers that there is considerable intrigue going on in the court of Louis XIII. There is rivalry between the king and Cardinal de Richelieu, which is reflected in a rivalry between the king's guards and the cardinal's guards. What is more, scandal follows the king's consort, Queen Anne of Austria, and the duke of Buckingham, who are in a liaison. In the third part, there is a religious war between the Catholics and Protestants of France. There is a siege at La Rochelle (an actual event). In the fourth part, a beautiful femme fatale causes the assassination of the duke of Buckingham, tries without success to poison d'Artagnan, and successfully poisons another character. In the last part, she gets her retribution. Her executioner is the brother of a priest whom she seduced and ruined. D'Artagnan is rewarded with a promotion. The principal characters have their prototypes in real people. The king, queen, cardinal, and other important members of the court all existed in fact. D'Artagnan is based on a real person.
