The Pelopon neaus was a celebrated peninsula comprehending the southern parts of Greece. It derived its name from Pelops as the word indicates, meanin the island of fie t has been called rgia, Pelas and galls, and has been thought to te semb e 111118 form the leaf of the plane tree. Its present name, the Morea, is derived from the Greek word, signifyinfija mulberry tree, which is found there in at a undance. It was nearly one hundred in se in le h, one hundred and forty in breadth, and about ve hundred and sixty ei t ia, circuinference. Separated from Greece 0 y by the narrow isthmus of Corinth, which is only five miles broad, it ap ared practicable to cut through the isthmus an 0 n a communies tion between the by of Corin and the Saronic gulf.
