Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory Practice of Aeroplane Design The Directly-Useful Technical series requires a few words by way of introduction. Technical books of the past have arranged themselves largely under two sections: the Theoretical and the Practical. Theoretical books have been written more for the training of college students than for the supply of information to men in practice, and have been greatly filled with problems of an academic character. Practical books have often sought the other extreme, omitting the scientific basis upon which all good practice is built, whether discernible or not. The present series is intended to occupy a midway position. The information, the problems and the exercises are to be of a directly-useful character, but must at the same time be wedded to that proper amount of scientific explanation which alone will satisfy the inquiring mind. We shall thus appeal to all technical people throughout the land, either students or those in actual practice. THEORY OF FLIGHT (CLASSIC REPR

THEORY OF FLIGHT (CLASSIC REPR PDF Author: Richard Von Mises
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781333471606
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 650

Book Description
Excerpt from Theory of Flight Thirty years ago, in the summer of 1913, the author gave for the first time a university course on the mechanics of airplane ight. On the basis of these lectures and similar ones in the following years there developed a small elementary textbook Fluglehre, which was pub lished up to 1936 in five German editions and translated into several languages. When asked, about three years ago, to prepare an English edition the author found that a book of somewhat different type would be more useful under the present conditions. There already exist in this country several introductory texts on the mechanics of ight suitable for beginners. On the other hand, a mature student or an engineer well versed in the advanced stages of higher mathematics can readily work his way through the currently published research papers. An actual demand does, however, seem to exist for a book at an intermediate level, say, on the borderline between the last year of college and the first year of graduate work. It is assumed that the reader of the present text knows the principles of calculus and has some training in general mechanics inso far as the standard college education provides for these things. Only such parts of the theory of ight as are understandable at this level are presented in the book, the mathematical theory of uid mechanics thus being excluded.1 In order to keep the book within reasonable limits peripheral questions and many details in all topics have had to be omitted. Although the book is meant as a text for students and engineers, it was not the author's purpose to supply the reader with ready-made formulas in which to substitute design data. Nor was it his intention to give a collection of results that the candidate for a degree should memorize. The book aims, as did the Fluglehre, to develop interest in and understanding of the fundamental ideas that underlie the design and the operation of modern aircraft. The problems inserted at the ends of the sections, particularly those marked by an asterisk, are intended to give some direction to the efforts of any reader who would apply himself toward a better comprehension of the diversified questions involved in the theory of airplane ight. Airplane Design and Construction (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Ottorino Pomilio

Book Description
Excerpt from Airplane Design and Construction By far the major part of experimental work in aero dynamics has been conducted in Europe rather than in America, where the feat of flying in a heavier than air ma chine was first accomplished. This book presents in greater detail than has hitherto been attempted in this country the application of aerodynamic research conducted abroad to practical airplane design. The airplane industry is now shifting from the design and construction of military types of craft to that of pleasure and commercial types. The publication of this book at this time is, therefore, opportune, and it should go far toward replacing by scientific procedure many of the cut and try methods now used. Employment of the data presented should enable designers to save both time and expense. The arrangement, presentation of subject matter, and explanation of the derivation of working formulae, together with the assumptions upon which they are based, and consequently their limitations, are such that the book lends itself to use as a text in technical schools and colleges.
