Index and Finding List of Serials Published in the British Isles, 1789–1832 PDF Author: William S. Ward
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813164877
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Growth of interest in the periodical literature of the past has emphasized increasingly the need for specialized hand lists, a need which the American Union List of Serials, the British Union Catalogue of the Periodical Publications in the University Libraries of the British Isles, and other existing indexes cannot answer. To satisfy one area of this need, William S. Ward has compiled a near-definitive index and finding list of periodicals and newspapers of the English Romantic period. In it are reflected the holdings of almost eleven hundred American, Canadian, and British libraries and newspaper offices. The volume is also the first to list titles and library locations of all the newspapers, magazines, and other serials published in the British Isles during the years between the French Revolution and the Great Reform Bill.

Venanzio Rauzzini and the Birth of a New Style in English Singing

Venanzio Rauzzini and the Birth of a New Style in English Singing PDF Author: Brianna E. Robertson-Kirkland
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 100053684X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 271

Book Description
Since the eighteenth century, the one-to-one singing lesson has been the most common method of delivery. The scenario allows the teacher to familiarise and individualise the lesson to suit the needs of their student; however, it can also lead to speculation about what is taught. More troubling is the heightened risk of gossip and rumour with the private space generating speculation about the student–teacher relationship. Venanzio Rauzzini (1746–1810), an Italian castrato living in England who became a highly sought-after singing master, was particularly susceptible since his students tended to be women, whose moral character was under more scrutiny than their male counterparts. Even so in 1792, The Bath Chronicle proclaimed the Italian castrato: 'the father of a new style in English singing'. Branding Rauzzini as a founder of an English style was not an error, but indicative of deep-seated anxieties about the Italian invasion on England’s musical culture. This book places teaching at the centre of the socio-historical narrative and provides unique insight into musical culture. Using a microhistory approach, this study is the first to focus in on the impact of teaching and casts new light on issues of celebrity culture, gender and nationalism in Georgian England.

Spectacular Flirtations

Spectacular Flirtations PDF Author: Gillian Perry

Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
During the Georgian period there was a remarkable proliferation of seductive visual imagery and written accounts of female performers. Focusing on the close relationship between the dramatic and visual arts at this time, this beautiful and stimulating book explores popular ideas of the actress as coquette, whore, celebrity, muse, and creative agent, charting her important symbolic role in contemporary attempts to professionalize both the theatre and the practice of fine art. Gill Perry shows how artists such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, Hoppner or Lawrence produced complex images of female performers as fashion icons, coquettes, dignified queens or creative artists. The result is a rich interdisciplinary study of the Georgian actress. Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art
