Book Description
Excerpt from The Early Teaching of History in the Secondary Schools of New York and Massachusetts Thirty-eight and eight-tenths per cent. Of all the academy students in regular attendance in New York State in 1825 attended schools in which history was taught. In 1860 per cent. Attended such schools. Consequently, in 1825, 61 per cent. Of all secondary school pupils could not have taken history in school. By 1860 only 5 per cent. Could be so classed. A further analysis is possible. Treating the material in a similar way, the number of pupils may be determined, who attended schools where general history or United States History in any special branch was given. Such an analysis appears in Table VII, and gives an indication of the importance of the various types of history taught. Book Description
Excerpt from Teaching of History in Elementary and Secondary Schools In beginning his illuminating treatment of the Holy Roman Empire, Lord Bryce wrote: "In history there is nothing isolated, and just as to explain a modern act of Parliament, or a modem conveyance of lands, we must go back to the feudal customs of the thirteenth century, so among the institutions of the Middle Ages there is scarcely one which can be understood until it is traced up either to classical or to primitive Teutonic antiquity." This is the first principle for the teacher of history to enforce, as it is the first lesson for the student of history to learn. History offers a third dimension to the superficial area of knowledge that each individual acquires through his own experience. When one boasts that he is not bound by any trammels of the past, he proclaims his own folly, and would, if he could, reduce himself to the intellectual level of the lower animals. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History and Civics in the Elementary, and the Secondary School It is the aim of this book to aid teachers of history, and especially those who have not had special training in historical work, better to comprehend the nature of the subject. Until they have considered the development of history as a way of portraying the experience of mankind, and know something of the methods by which it seeks to reach the sure basis of fact, and until they have seriously studied the problems of historical instruction, they cannot feel a large interest in the subject, and consequently cannot inspire their pupils with such an interest. The first part of this book has been written to set them on the way toward a better comprehension of these aspects of history. The second part offers a review of the general field, which may guide those who require such help intelligently to study its many phases. While this review is constructed on the basis of the programme suggested in the first part, it may serve almost equally well where the programme in use includes only sections of the field, or distributes the matter in a different way. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in the Teaching of History The following pages are concerned with the teaching Of boys and girls in the middle forms Of secondary schools, and even for this stage deal with only a small number Of the numerous problems presented by the teaching Of history. They aim at bringing into strong relief a few fundamental positions, and make no claim to be an ex haustive treatment of the subject. If, therefore, certain methods and principles of proved value are not men tioned, it must not be concluded that they have been either overlooked or undervalued. My thanks for valuable advice are due to my colleague Miss A. J. Cooper, to Mr. J. Wells, Fellow and Tutor of Wadham College, to Mr. J. B. Baker, Tutor to the Non Collegiate Students, and to Mr. E. Barker, Fellow and Tutor Of St. John's College. It must not be assumed that they are necessarily in agreement with my views. I have also to acknowledge the kindness of Prof. Foster Watson, who allowed me to see the proof-sheets of his book, T he Beginnings of the T eacning of Modern Subjects in England, and of Messrs. A. C. Black in permitting me to use extracts from their publication, E nglis/t History I llustrated from Original Sources. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to -be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of his tory from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and for ward into the future with less emotion and more cold blooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History A practical teacher cannot avoid developing a certain bias in favour of some ideas and against others, but it has been attempted in this volume to present the case for each school of method with as much fairness as possible. No attempt has been made to produce a stereotyped syllabus or universal code of rules of method, as it is far too early to decide what will be the ultimate product of the very conspicuous reform movement which is at present in course of development among teachers of history. The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos (Classic Reprint)

The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Rolla Milton Tryon
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330834206
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos This book has been written in the interest of better history teaching. It deals in most part with what might be denominated everyday classroom problems in the teaching of history in the upper-elementary and high-school grades, both junior and senior. The technic of teaching has received the chief emphasis in the majority of the chapters, and the general psychological, pedagogical, and historical phases of the subject, as well as the unsettled problem of what to teach, have been omitted. The idea back of the discussion throughout is that there is a technic of teaching history in the junior and senior high schools that can be mastered by a teacher and actually applied in directing the daily classroom activities, regardless of the content of the course. The writer fully realizes the dangers accompanying a discussion which attempts to be so practical and concrete as the one contained in the following pages purports to be. When one presents a history-recitation score card, a specific procedure for supervised study in history, a detailed outline of how to use a textbook, a definite scheme to attain progress within the subject, directions for writing a term paper, concrete examples of the problem-solving method in history, and a score or more of similar suggestions, one is likely to be met with the objection that the specific procedure proposed is by no means the best or the only one. The author's rejoinder to such an objection is that in no case has he done more than present a way of doing a specific thing. This definiteness in all probability will be more helpful to some teachers than to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Suggestions for the Teaching of History and Civics in the High School The Duty of the History Teacher to the High School. - The problem of teaching history in the high school is not alone one of meeting requirements for affiliation with the State Univer sity. The first duty of the high school teacher is to the majority of the students. If this obligation is fully discharged there can be little question of affiliation with the University, for that will come as a matter of course. In view of the fact that a majority of the high school students never go to college, the task is rather one of equipping them with a certain amount of training which will be of direct benefit to them in understand ing and meeting the problems offlaibriife. Under these cir cumstances, it is necessary to throw the pupils into contact with problems which they might otherwise better attack at a later datei' This is an unfortunate situation, but neither university nor high school can ignore it. The public welfare demands a hearty co operation between both institutions in order to accomplish as much as possible for'the high school student. Book Description
Excerpt from A District Conference Held at Gary on History Teaching in the Secondary Schools, Vol. 13 AS an outgrowth of the work, and as a means of reaching a considerable number of high school teachers and of facili tating the study of the problems of their field by the teachers themselves, the Conference on History Teaching in Secondary Schools was organized. It was held in the Emerson School at Gary on February 26 and 27, 1915. Its purpose was two fold; first, to consider some of the more vital and concrete problems in the everyday teaching of history in high schools, and secondly, to define standards for measuring the worth of courses of study and methods of teaching history in the schools.
