Book Description
The Tanco pegmatite at Bernic Lake, Manitoba, Canada is a highly fractionated rare-element class, LCT family pegmatite with 9 internal zones and is one of the largest complex internally zoned pegmatites in the world. The outer zones of the pegmatite are generally concentric, while the shape of the inner zones, based on underground workings and drill core observations, are very irregular and complex. Tanco presents a unique opportunity to calculate the bulk composition of a pegmatite which, unlike previous works on other pegmatites, does not need to consider structural deformation and/or erosion to reconstruct the original size and shape. Tanco is essentially an undeformed blind pegmatite, with only minimal exposure through erosion at the bottom of Bernic Lake. Almost no reconstructive interpretation is required as th amount of eroded material is negligible and does not affect the over-all bulk composition calculations. Given the available information from the drill core logs and underground workings on theTanco pegmatite, it was possible to create the first 3D computer representation of a pegmatite. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book Description
Wodginite (Ta, NB, Mn, Fe, Sn, Ti) 2 0 4, mangano-tantalite (Mn, Fe) (Ta, Nb, Ti, Sn) 2 0 6 and pseudo-ixiolite (Ta, Nb, Mn, Fe, Sn, Ti) 2 0 4 are the three major Ta-oxides occurring in the Tanco pegmatite at Bernic Lake, Manitoba, wodginite being by far the most abundant. Microlite Ca2 Ta2, O6 (O, OH,F) and tapiolite (Fe, Mn) (Ta, Nb) 2 0 6 occur in minor amounts. A detailed crystallographic study was carried out on the three major Ta-oxides which are closely related crystallographically. Orthorhombic pseudo-ixiolite has the simplest cell (a=4.76, b=5.75, c=5.16 *A). Upon heating to 1000*C for several hours over a range of oxygen fugacities, the pseudo-ixiolites are converted to orthorhombic tantalites with the a-period three times that of pseudo-ixiolite and with a small increase in comparative a-dimension, with b remaining constant and c decreasing slightly. This change from pseudo-ixiolite to tantalite is considered to result from disordering-ordering of the cations by x-ray photographs show that the two phases are not completely disordered or ordered... The wodginites generally have lower Mn and higher Fe, Sn and Ti contents, and higher Ta/NB ratios than either tantalite or pseudo-ixiolite... The Ta-minerals occur in distinct zones within the pegmatite. The pseudo-ixiolite occurs in the quartz-plagioclase-K-feldspar-spodumene-muscovite zone and wodginite occurs in the K-feldspar-muscovite-plagioclase-quartz-beryl zone just inside the pseudo-ixiolite bearing zone. The albitic aplite contains both tantalite and wodginite. The zoning of these Ta-minerals within the pegmatite is discussed in relation to the paragenesis of the body.

Book Description
The Tanco pegmatite at Bernic Lake is located about 125 miles northeast of Winnipeg in the Lac du Bonnet Mining Division of southeastern Manitoba. Previous works on the same pegmatite may refer to it as the Montgary or Chemalloy pegmatite, according to the names of the companies that in different times were mining the deposit. At present the property is owned by Tanco. It is a complex zoned pegmatite which contains the western world's largest known reserve of pollucite, the chief ore mineral of cesium, besides several lithium-bearing units. Other minerals of economic importance are Ta oxides, spodumene and beryl, the first ones being the main ore minerals presently extracted. The pegmatite is located near the margin of a granitic intrusive rock, and it is bordered by amphibolite; the earlier rocks in the area and the pegmatite itself are all of Precambrian age ... The mineralogy is typical of that of cesium-lithium deposits found in various parts of the world, the principal minerals being: quartz, alkali and plagioclase feldspars, lithium nicas, spodumene, pollucite, and amblygonite-montebasite; accessory minerals include beryl, lithiophilite, apatite, tourmaline, wodginite-tantalite-pseudoixiolite, tapiolite, cassiterite, microlite, ilmenite, rhodochrosite and some sulphides ... The chemical and physical full definition of the micas from Bernic Lake was one of two objectives of the present study, and the variation of the physical properties and crystal structure with the chemistry, especially with respect to the Li, Rb and Cs contents, was the other objective ... All studies should lead to a better understanding of the paragenesis of the different minerals in the pegmatite.
