Book Description
in Ukrainian fields and forests in the 1940s and 1950s, but what makes any successful popular insurgency work, whether it takes place in America in 1776 or in troubled parts of the world today. History aside, Roman Mac's story is also a moving human document. There is tragedy, heartbreak and heroic endurance here, both witnessed and lived. And Roman depicts it all in modest, straightforward style not only the great struggle that was going on around him, but also the struggle that was going on within himself. We see and feel the rustic joys and travails of village life, the destruction and loss that war, Nazism and Communism bring upon it, and we, too, struggle along the "winding path to freedom" with a young boy who manages to keep his faith, his humanity and not the least of accomplishments amidst so much suffering and sorrow his sense of humor through it all. Although I was already familiar with Ukrainian history and, as an aide to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan, was 2 ROMAN D. MAC an eye witness to the last chapters of the Cold War, reading Roman Mac's story made me understand more fully what that colossal struggle was really like for the ordinary people who bore the brunt of it. His gift of making us see it all as he saw it then, through a young boy's eyes, brings alive both the brutality of battle and magic, solitary moments in the still forest with only woodland creatures as companions. We feel the pelting snow and piercing cold, we smell the smoke of the campfires, and we hear both the whiz of bullets and the deep, moving chords of the freedom fighters'songs, just as the young Roman Mac did more than half a century ago. Then, with the battle over, we follow a troubled but determined young man on the road to a new life in the west. We share the ups and downs of a new series of trials and tests from which he emerges once again with his humanity and his humor intact. By book's end, we feel as if we've walked beside him all the way, and we, too, experience his joy in achieving success, dignity and a happy family life in America. Thank you, Roman Mac, for sharing and showing us so much, and for doing it with such clarity, honesty and goodness of heart.

This book addresses the divide that exists between the reality of finance and the image it projects. A functioning financial system is an essential feature of a modern economy, providing it with money, credit, capital, and investments. Conversely, those who provide this essential service are neither respected nor trusted. The causes and consequences of this divide is explored using the British experience from 1800 to the present, drawing upon a mixture of factual evidence and contemporary fiction. Nothing of this scale has been attempted before and this is the product of 50 years of research.

Thrown out by his second wife and wanting to leave a dead-end detective agency to start his own, he reluctantly accepts his psychic friend Camden's invitation to stay in Camden's boarding house in Parkland, North Carolina. Meanwhile, working the case of the murder of Albert Bennett, Randall's only clue is a notebook filled with odd musical notation. When another client, Melanie Gentry, hires him to prove her great-grandmother was murdered by her lover, composer John Burrows Ashford, over authorship of "Patchwork Melodies," Randall sets out to find a connection to Bennett's murder, as well as to the murder of a Smithsonian director, who was preparing a new PBS documentary on early American music. Randall's investigations lead him to another notebook, where he finds not only "Two Hearts Singing," Ashford's most famous song, but a valuable early copy of Stephen Foster's "Oh! Susanna," hidden in the cover. But things become more complicated when Ashford's spirit parks itself in Cam...and refuses to leave until Randall proves Ashford's innocence.

The Lonely Places

The Lonely Places PDF Author: J.M. Morris

ISBN: 030748064X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
In the electrifying tradition of Minette Walters and Ruth Rendell, J. M. Morris savagely plumbs the depths of psychological terror in an uncompromising and brutally brilliant suspense debut. The Lonely Places etches a fiendishly compelling portrait of madness and menace, eroticism and terror, that pits a woman’s mind against a world where nothing is as it seems. THE LONELY PLACES “Then along came a spider Who sat down beside her...” Ruth Gemmill is broken. All she has known, all she has loved, all she has ever desired, have laid her waste. As autumn’s shadows begin to seep through her London home, Ruth escapes to the fading twilight of northern England in a last, desperate attempt to stave off the encroaching darkness. She needs the consolation of her brother, Alex: a man she cannot breathe without. It’s not the first time. She couldn’t breathe without Matt either. Matt, who used to beat her. Matt, who loved to hurt her. Matt, whom she loved with a masochistic passion that destroyed everything in its path. But Ruth moved on, reinvented herself. Ruth found the strength to escape the terrifying abuse of her domestic existence. Or so she would like to think. Little does she realize the extent of the crippling cobwebs her vicious lover has spun throughout her mind. But in the grim, foreboding town of Greenwell, where her brother now lives, fate deals Ruth another blow. For Alex has disappeared. To bring him safely home, she will be forced to confront her emotional demons through a bewildering landscape, where the phantoms of a menacing past lurk around every corner, wielding memories, determined to wake Ruth up to the most horrifying reality of all. Some webs can never be swept away, some spiders sting to destroy.... With chilling emotional precision and searing insight, J. M. Morris has created a novel that is at once devastatingly plausible, utterly poignant—and impossible to forget.
