Betrayed by her Grandmother, the Countess of Cortuna, who schemes to give Mieu¿s hand in marriage to her worst enemy, she turns to unlikely allies for help: The Seventh Day Bandits, a group of thieves that strike when most decent folk are at church. Mieu soon finds herself on the run in a wild and lawless territory where she discovers a mysterious castle that seems far too good to be true. Meanwhile, in the sleepy town of San Marga, Mieu¿s escape from the countess creates some unexpected consequences when the entire town is sensationalized by her disappearance. Amongst the townsfolk is a lowly stable boy and `no-tail¿ named Ayan, who, having been abused and insulted all of his life for having been born without a tail, is desperate to prove himself and join the legendary order of knights known as the Wulvekraken. Ayan surprises himself by breaking the rules, and setting off on an unlikely quest to free the blue-haired maiden, Mieu, from the highwaymen he mistakenly believes to be her captors. With his cousin Jon Cabal, a refugee from a war-stricken land, and a peculiar scholar named Earon Deacon en tow, Ayan finds himself on thrilling adventure beyond his wildest dreams where he obtains Shadowgleam, the legendary sword of Vellorea¿s first king.Mieu and Ayan¿s fates intertwine as they weave in and out of a perilous conflict between a settlement of refugees, and an army of invaders that seek to enslave them. They do all of this under the watchful eye Griol, the all-powerful deity of the Velloreans, who manipulates all the players from the shadows of the netherworld, and waits patiently to claim the souls of fallen warriors.

Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis PDF Author: David Gallagher
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9042027096
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 470

Book Description
The origins of selected instances of metamorphosis in Germanic literature are traced from their roots in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, grouped roughly on an ‘ascending evolutionary scale’ (invertebrates, birds, animals, and mermaids). Whilst a broad range of mythological, legendary, fairytale and folktale traditions have played an appreciable part, Ovid’s Metamorphoses is still an important comparative analysis and reference point for nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-language narratives of transformations. Metamorphosis is most often used as an index of crisis: an existential crisis of the subject or a crisis in a society’s moral, social or cultural values. Specifically selected texts for analysis include Jeremias Gotthelf’s Die schwarze Spinne (1842) with the terrifying metamorphoses of Christine into a black spider, the metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa in Kafka’s Die Verwandlung (1915), ambiguous metamorphoses in E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Der goldne Topf (1814), Hermann Hesse’s Piktors Verwandlungen (1925), Der Steppenwolf (1927) and Christoph Ransmayr’s Die letzte Welt (1988). Other mythical metamorphoses are examined in texts by Bachmann, Fouqué, Fontane, Goethe, Nietzsche, Nelly Sachs, Thomas Mann and Wagner, and these and many others confirm that metamorphosis is used historically, scientifically, for religious purposes; to highlight identity, sexuality, a dream state, or for metaphoric, metonymic or allegorical reasons.

Just Remember This

Just Remember This PDF Author: Colin Bratkovich
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1483645193
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 941

Book Description
I have completed this manuscript Just Remember This, or as American Pop Singers 1900-1950+, about music before the 1950s in America. It perhaps offers knowledge and insights not previously found in other musical reference books. I have moreover been working on this book very meticulously over the past twelve-plus years. It started as a bit of fun and gradually became serious as I began to listen along with the vocalists of popular music, of the era before 1950, essentially just before the dawn of rock and roll. If you can call it that! Indeed genre and labeling of American music started here, and then from everywhere. While the old adage of always starting from somewhere could be noted in every century, the 1900s had produced the technology. Understanding the necessity, more so, finds a curiosity on the part of a general public hungry for entertainment, despite 6 day work weeks, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II.
