Excerpt from The Synaesthesia of a Blind Subject, With Comparative Data From an Asynaesthetic Blind Subject 1. General Introduction In a recent monograph (11) the senior writer reviewed the general subject of synaesthesia and described a very complicated case in a blind reagent. In that investigation it was found that the reagent not only associated a color or a certain degree of brightness with every sensory experience other than the visual but also that these same colored associates invariably appeared in his processes of thinking wherever imagery was employed. The investigation here reported is largely concerned with a description of these analogous associations in certain of the higher a intellectual processes. Out of the vast amount of literature on synaesthesia we find very little mention of the existence of synaesthetic phenomena in connection with mental processes other than that of perceiving. In no instance has a case in the realm of thinking been fully described. In fact we do not know to what extent, in the. same individual, synaesthetic phenomena appear both in perceiving and in thinking. So far as our knowledge goes no case has ever been reported in which colored associates or allied associated imagery appeared in thinking but not in perceiving. There seems to be good reason for believing that where such phenomena appear in perceiving, they likewise occur in thinking and that the failure to report this fact, generally, in the literature on synaesthesias has been due to superficial investigations of the phenomena. This study shows how fiction that makes use of textiles as an essential element utilizes synaesthetic writing and synaesthetic metaphor to create an affective link to, and response in, the reader. These links and responses are examined using affect theory from Silvan Tomkins and Brian Massumi and work on synaesthesia by Richard Cytowic, Lawrence Marks, and V.S. Ramachandran, among others. Synaesthetic writing, including synaesthetic metaphors, has been explored in poetry since the 1920s and, more recently, in fiction, but these studies have been general in nature. By narrowing the field of investigation to those novels that specifically employ three types of hand-crafted textiles (quilt-making, knitting and embroidery), the book isolates how these textiles are used in fiction. The combination of synaesthesia, memory, metaphor and, particularly, synaesthetic metaphor in fiction with textiles in the text of the case studies selected, shows how these are used to create affect in readers, enhancing their engagement in the story. The work is framed within the context of the history of textile production and the use of textiles in fiction internationally, but concentrates on Australian authors who have used textiles in their writing. The decision to focus on Australian authors was taken in light of the quality and depth of the writing of textile fiction produced in Australia between 1980 and 2005 in the three categories of hand-crafted textiles – quilt-making, knitting and embroidery. The texts chosen for intensive study are: Kate Grenville’s The Idea of Perfection (1999, quilting); Marele Day’s Lambs of God (1997, knitting) and Anne Bartlett’s Knitting (2005, knitting); Jessica Anderson’s Tirra Lirra by the River (1978, embroidery) and Marion Halligan’s Spider Cup (1990, embroidery).

One of the most fundamental capacities of language is the ability to express what speakers see, hear, feel, taste, and smell. Sensory Linguistics is the interdisciplinary study of how language relates to the senses. This book deals with such foundational questions as: Which semiotic strategies do speakers use to express sensory perceptions? Which perceptions are easier to encode and which are “ineffable”? And what are appropriate methods for studying the sensory aspects of linguistics? After a broad overview of the field, a detailed quantitative corpus-based study of English sensory adjectives and their metaphorical uses is presented. This analysis calls age-old ideas into question, such as the idea that the use of perceptual metaphors is governed by a cognitively motivated “hierarchy of the senses”. Besides making theoretical contributions to cognitive linguistics, this research monograph showcases new empirical methods for studying lexical semantics using contemporary statistical methods.
