Book Description
Bobby Clantinani’s most fervent dream was to become the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, but he only weighed one-hundred and fifty-four pounds. His father, Oran, expected big things from Bobby and he ruled his family like a tyrant. Oran’s biggest hope was his oldest son, Ted, who was a heavyweight contender heading for a championship bout. While Ted is being lined up for a shot at one of the heavyweight crowns, Bobby is fighting on the second circuit, consisting of high school gymnasiums, rundown hotels, roller rink arenas, and junior college parking lots. Feeling alienated and alone, Bobby finds solace in the arms of Ted’s fiancé, Judith Tesch, a strikingly beautiful boxing groupie who Bobby adores and loves. He also finds a father figure in the form of Benny Bear, a seventy-four year old African American cut man who once fought as a welterweight. Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities

Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities PDF Author: Mary Shepperson
Publisher: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht
ISBN: 3647540536
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
The emergence of urbanism in Iraq occurred under the distinctive climatic conditions of the Mesopotamian plain; rainy winters and extremely hot summers profoundly affected the formation and development of these early cities. Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities explores the relationship between society, culture and lived experience through the way in which sunlight was manipulated in the urban built environment. Light is approached as both a physical phenomenon, which affects comfort and the practical usability of space, and as a symbolic phenomenon rich in social and religious meaning. Through the reconstruction of ancient urban light environments, to the extent possible from the archaeological remains, the location, timing and meaning of activities within early Mesopotamian cities become accessible. Sunlight is shown to have influenced the formation and symbolism of urban architecture and shaped the sensory experience of urban life. From cities as part of the sunlit landscape, this work progresses to consider city forms as a whole and then to the examination of architectural types; residential, sacred and palatial. Architectural analysis is complemented by analysis of contemporary textual sources, along with iconographic and artefactual evidence. The cities under detailed examination are limited to those on the Mesopotamian plain, focusing on the Early Dynastic periods up to the end of the second millennium BC.This volume demonstrates the utility of light as a tool with which to analyse, not just ancient Mesopotamian settlements, but the built environment of any past society, especially where provision of, or protection from sunlight critically affects life. The active influence of sunlight is demonstrated within Mesopotamian cities at every scale of analysis.

The Sunlight On The Garden

The Sunlight On The Garden PDF Author: Elizabeth Speller
Publisher: Granta Books
ISBN: 1847086608
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
In 1880, Ada Curtis bore Gerald Howard the first of several illegitimate children. Ada was a housemaid, the daughter of a Lincolnshire butcher. Gerald was her employer and the son of a once-grand family now obsessed with its own threadbare nobility. They thereby sent their descendants tumbling chaotically into the twentieth century. More than a century later, inspired by the stories, reinventions and half-truths in her family's past, Elizabeth Speller - Gerald and Ada's great-granddaughter - set out to trace the criss-crossing lines of their history, and, as she recovered from a mental breakdown, she began to wonder if that history offered any explanation of what had happened in her own life. The search brings vividly to life the passions and hopes of four generations, amid tales of wealth inherited and lost, eccentricity, sexual indiscretion and madness. Ultimately, this book will remain in the memory as a beautifully realised sequence of portraits of mothers and daughters.

The Sunlight Diet

The Sunlight Diet PDF Author: Dr Jenny Livanos Holistic Optometrist
Publisher: Balboa Press
ISBN: 198229888X
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
The sun has many benefits – it’s essential for health and wellbeing, allowing us to make vitamin D, set our body clock for sleep and utilise it for key biological processes in our body. Sunlight supports our bone health, helps with our cardiovascular system, boosts the immune system, regulates our mood, reduces inflammation, minimises the risk for infection, relieves pain, helps us relax and feel happy and protects us from cancer, just to name a few! The lack of adequate sunlight exposure, coupled with increasing overexposure to artificial blue light from digital devices and artificial lighting at night, is contributing to a wide range of chronic and severe health issues at all ages. Blue light from screens suppresses the production of our sleep hormone melatonin and has been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. Artificial lighting sources have very different frequencies, intensities and are static, compared to sunlight. The wrong type of light at the wrong time of day can accelerate cell damage, affect our sleep and circadian rhythm and ultimately our physical and mental health. This book aims to educate about The Sunlight Diet, an easy and free approach to optimise our healthspan and happiness – with simple actions we can take every day. We think about diet and exercise for better health but just as important is our exposure to light every day, through our eyes and skin, indoors and outdoors, daytime and night time. Your health is in your hands!
