Excerpt from The Sumario Compendioso of Brother Juan Diez: The Earliest Mathematical Work of the New World In making the translation the original methods of expression have been fol lowed in many cases in which smoother diction would have suggested greater free dom of rendition The reason has been, in general, the desire to bring such expressions as 8 per cent, 8 per one com and 91 a. Com, and four and 5 into sharp contrast with the corresponding ones of the present time, and to show the great advance in symbolism and in methods of solution and proof. Such minor errors as were common in a century of careless proofreading have usually been corrected without comment. Aside from this, a certain freedom of translation has been assumed for the evident purpose of aiding the reader to follow the spirit of the text.
