Book Description
Excerpt from The Study of the Pulse, Arterial, Venous, and Hepatic: And of the Movements of the Heart In the following pages I give the results of an enquiry into certain features of the circulation which has engaged my attention for the last twenty years. Originally begun in order to ascertain the changes in the maternal circulation during pregnancy, the enquiry has broadened out, so that it embraces all forms of heart failure. For instance, I found pulse irregularity a very frequent symptom in pregnancy. The question was then forced upon me, "What is the clinical significance of pulse irregularity?" I think it will be readily admitted by all who are familiar with books dealing with the pulse that the present-day knowledge is not merely imperfect - it is chaotic. I was consequently led into a very intricate enquiry as to the different forms of pulse irregularity, and in order to appraise its value as a diagnostic sign I had to watch individual patients for many years during a great variety of conditions that entailed great stress upon the heart. The results of my enquiry I have now embodied, and this study has opened up a field for ingenious speculation far beyond what either physiologists or clinicians have imagined. Experimental observations have failed to give anything like the interesting and easily demonstrated results obtained by the simple methods I have employed. Apart from the academic interest that such a study may excite, it is of real service in giving us the true significance of, and bringing us into intimate relationship with, one of the most common and least understood symptoms that daily confronts the medical practitioner. Book Description
On the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals William Harvey William Harvey,1 April 1578 - 3 June 1657, was an English physician who made seminal contributions in anatomy and physiology. He was the first known physician to describe completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the brain and body by the heart, though earlier writers, such as Realdo Colombo, Michael Servetus, and Jacques Dubois, had provided precursors of the theory. In 1973 the William Harvey Hospital was constructed in the town of Ashford, a few miles from his birthplace of Folkestone. Book Description
William Harvey (1578-1657) was a rebel in medical science: Contrary to contemporary practice, he began his epoch-making investigation into the action of the heart and the blood's circulation by minutely observing their action in live animals and by a lengthy series of dissections, rather than by mere reliance on the anatomical lessons of ancient medicine and philosophy. "On the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals", including explanations of heart valves and arterial pulse, stands as a triumph of true scientific inquiry, and is still regarded as one of the greatest discoveries in physiology.
