Many student-athletes will find themselves questioning if they are more of a student or an athlete at some point in their academic career. Previous research has looked at gender roles, race and masculinity when developing male student-athlete identity, however this paper explores what other factors might influence football student-athletes to privilege one identity over another? According to Stryker's Identity Theory, the creation of roles comes from interaction with external forces and is linked to social positions within the social structure. This study explores the individual factors that influence the student and the athlete identity, and how that individual negotiates between these identities. To answer this question, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 male student-athletes that met the following criteria: have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, expected to graduate in five years or less, and a member of the football team. I found for the 'student' identity, the five dominant social structures that influenced the participants' student identity were Family, Eligibility, Academic recognition, Medical and Freshman Redshirting, and the Institution. While Family, Faculty Support, the Recruiting Process, God, Media, Injuries, Teammates, and a Student of the Game were the eight dominant social structures that affected the athletic identity. There were seven dominant tensions that the student-athletes spoke, and there were three dominate ways these student-athletes navigated through those conflicts. Through Stryker's Identity Theory I found these social structures were framing these student-athletes as only athletes using both role expectations and interaction with others in the structure. As a result, these student-athletes were handing these conflicts based off their salient identity--their athlete identity. I found that as long as the social structures are pointing toward their athletic identity these student-athletes did not have any conflict. When the social structure does not point to their athlete identity was when conflict happened. It is at that time that the participants' identity salience begins to shift, which started happening for a few of the participants that realized their athletic career was ending. When their identity begins to change so does their role expectations and how others interact with them.

Student athletes hold a unique identity at colleges and universities all across the nation. They are tasked with the high demands and time constraints of being both a college level student and athlete. While there have been growing conversations about student athletes at Division I institutions, those pertaining to Division II student athletes remain minimal. While student athletes have a great deal in common, they all come from different backgrounds that have contributed to who they are today. When arriving to college, these unique individuals are introduced to institutional power structures that constrain and control their identities and individuality. These larger power structures have sculpted definitions of what it means to be a "good" student athlete. Meanwhile, society also has defined what a student athlete is. These preconceived notions become even more complicated when using an intersectional approach that takes into consideration the additional identities student athletes hold such as race, class, gender and more. As a result, student athletes are left with the task of living up to the "good" student athlete expectation while also managing a stigmatized student athlete identity. In this study, I used nonprobability and snowball sampling methods to conduct 14 interviews that revealed the ways in which student athletes managed these complex identities. Participants thoroughly talked about the student athlete subculture, hyper surveillance technologies, pressures to sacrifice pieces of their identity and managing a stigmatized identity. Student athletes strive to satisfy the demands of the higher power structures while their personal needs are disregarded.

Erik Erikson (1982) has determined that the Identity vs. Identity Confusion crisis takes place at this very time and if not successfully resolved one will develop in a psychosocial manner that can impact negatively throughout the rest of one's life. The impasse that the student athlete is faced with is that so much is determined by their performance in their sport rather than their performance as an individual away from their sport. I will focus on the identity development of male and female adolescent collegiate student-athletes and how these two very important components, gender identity and social group identity, interplay in the development of some adolescents and create its own type of identity development completely, Student-Athlete Identity Development (S.A.I.D.) It will be argued that student-athletes, particularly males, have embarked upon this time of exploration in their lives and begin with a foreclosed sense of identity and within months they start to alter their view of self as well as their place within the athletic world.

"The topic of athletic identity has garnered increased attention in recent decades. While there have been shifts in understandings, the majority of studies rely on the original conceptualization of the construct based on Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder's (1993) work (Ronkainen, Kavoura, & Ryba, 2016a). Little to no research has assessed athletic identity within a conceptual framework that depicts the overall self-concept and related context, which would display clearer connections to identity theories (Burke & Stets, 2009; Jones & Abes, 2013; Ronkainen et al., 2016a). Thus, the current investigation was guided and organized within the Reconceptualized Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity (RMMDI) framework, a comprehensive model depicting the multidimensional self as situated within the greater context that influences identity (Jones & Abes, 2013). The current study used a qualitative descriptive approach framed within a constructivist epistemology to explore and describe athletic identity as positioned within the holistic self and context. Participants included twelve NCAA Division I student-athletes across the following team sports: soccer, softball, and basketball. Participants completed individual semi-structured qualitative interviews which included an identity mapping activity consistent with the RMMDI framing. Three themes were generated using reflexive thematic analysis: Self and Athlete: Orientation of the Self; Lifelong Immersion in Sport Culture; and "It's a Lifestyle": Passion for the Game. Results indicate that athletic identity was one of the few most personally important identities within the multidimensional self. Participant accounts demonstrate that athletic identity can be positioned and described as a core identity (e.g., central; primary within self-view) or as a salient identity (e.g., important; on secondary-level within self-view). This positioning of athletic identity in relation to other identities (i.e., described in two orientation groups) seemed to be influenced by the broader sport context and connected with corresponding athletic lifestyle behaviors. Participant descriptions support that continued immersion in sport culture and engaging in athletic lifestyle decisions can reinforce the identification with the athlete role. Practical implications and related competencies for the fields of sport and exercise psychology, counseling, and student development are provided. These implications include, but are not limited to, the following: acknowledging and respecting the importance of athletic identity for individuals, working to facilitate self-reflection, striving to understand contextual factors that influence identity, and attending to these personal and contextual influences to work toward developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive practice."--Abstract from author supplied metadata
