Book Description
Excerpt from The Stud, for Practical Purposes and Practical Men Many persons would without fear or hesitation enter on the task I have here undertaken: many might very properly do so from being more com petent to the undertaking and many more, from the self-conviction that they are so, would fear lessly at once plunge into the matter. How they might bring themselves out of it, perhaps, admits of as much doubt as I feel in entering on the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Life and the Study of Man The object of this work is neither to amaze nor amuse the reader, but to interest and instruct those who are seek ing improvement. There is very little in it, perhaps, that is new to every one, but the thoughts and reflections it. Embodies are brought forward in such novel connec tions, and they are presented in such unusual forms, that, even if the sentiments are found to be old, the application will doubtless appear to be new. The leading object of the writer is to do good to his fellow man, and if he fails. In his purpose, he will at least claim the credit of having done the best that he could It has not been his aim, this book, to appear either original or brilliant. It was. His design simply to bring to the notice of the reader, on the subjects which have been considered, the best thoughts that could be found in the language, and wherever he has discovered his ideas already in print, expressed in language better than he could write, or even as well, he has not deemed it either necessary or proper to write them anew, but has adopted the language of the author without change, believing as he does that we cannot make. The Practical Education (Classic Reprint)

The Practical Education (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: David Starr Jordan

Book Description
Excerpt from The Practical Education Men of affairs often sneer at college men and col lege methods. Some of their criticisms are justified, others not. Such justification as they may have had is found in the lack of fitness in college training. Among conditions of life infinitely varied the college has decreed that all boys should take the same studies, in the same way, and at the same time, and that these studies should be the routine of the English boy of a century ago. In thus repeating the thoughts and learning of nations half forgotten, the minds of some Greek-minded and Roman-minded men were stimulated to their highest activity, and for them such training was good and adequate. But there were some, American-minded perhaps, whose powers were not awakened by such influences, These came forth from the college walls into the life of the world, as Rip Van Winkle from the Catskills, dazed by the new experiences to which their studies had given no clue. Democracy and Education

Democracy and Education PDF Author: John Dewey

Category : Juvenile Nonfiction

Book Description
. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Book for Practical People Never before in the history of our country have the plain, honest, practical people, the backbone of the nation, taken so much interest in the questions of the day. The true, earnest citizen is not content to be a mere echo for his party leader, but is thinking for himself and acting in a manner that often bewilders and alarms the professional politician. We believe that no other single volume presents an equal array of talent, such as distinguishes the well-known authors of the various subjects. The man of affairs will find the questions of the times handled by acknowledged masters. The business failures and riots fresh in our minds, show that these questions are not idle theories, but subjects demanding the careful thought and earnest attention of every true citizen. Our friend, the farmer, will recognize in his department old friends, whose names are synonymous with the highest expert knowledge of the subjects with which they deal. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Educationists: And Their Systems of Teaching This book is the product of my official duties as Principal of a Normal School, the various Essays being part of a series of lectures delivered by me to the students in training. My object in drawing them up was to give increased interest to the study of education as a science, by connecting its principles with the educationists or teachers who originated them, or first wrought them out successfully in practice.
