The Crystal Structures of Some Thorium and Uranium Compounds
Author: Norman Charles Baenziger
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Crystallography
Languages : en
Pages : 116
Book Description
The chemistry and metallurgy of thorium and uranium were investigated extensively by workers on the Manhattan Project during the past few years. These investigations were pursued by all available scientific methods. Among these, the X-ray diffraction method provided a powerful tool for phase identification and structure determination, which greatly assisted in the solution of the metallurgical and chemical problems. Isostructural compounds with the composition U6M (where M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) have been found and the structure determined. Single crystals, examined by the rotation, oscillation, Laue, and Weissenberg methods, exhibited the diffraction of D4h - 4/mmm.

Structural Chemistry of Inorganic Actinide Compounds
Author: Sergey Krivovichev
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080467911
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 505
Book Description
Structural Chemistry of Inorganic Actinide Compounds is a collection of 13 reviews on structural and coordination chemistry of actinide compounds. Within the last decade, these compounds have attracted considerable attention because of their importance for radioactive waste management, catalysis, ion-exchange and absorption applications, etc. Synthetic and natural actinide compounds are also of great environmental concern as they form as a result of alteration of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste under Earth surface conditions, during burn-up of nuclear fuel in reactors, represent oxidation products of uranium miles and mine tailings, etc. The actinide compounds are also of considerable interest to material scientists due to the unique electronic properties of actinides that give rise to interesting physical properties controlled by the structural architecture of respective compounds. The book provides both general overview and review of recent developments in the field, including such emergent topics as nanomaterials and nanoparticles and their relevance to the transfer of actinides under environmental conditions. * Covers over 2,000 actinide compounds including materials, minerals and coordination polymers* Summarizes recent achievements in the field* Some chapters reveal (secret) advances made by the Soviet Union during the 'Cold war'

The Crystal Structures of CeB4, ThB4, and UB4
Author: Allan Zalkin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Boron compounds
Languages : en
Pages : 6
Book Description
The compounds CeB4, ThB4, and UB4 have been shown to crystallize in a new structure, which has been worked out from x-ray diffraction patterns. This structure is designated as the "ThB4-type structure," since that was the compound first observed. These borides were prepared by D.L. Sawyer and L. Brewer of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, who heated the metals and boron together in vacuum at about 1500© C. Powder diffraction patterns were obtained of the three compounds. Rotation and Weissenberg patterns were obtained for 110 and 001 axes of a small single crystal of ThB4. The patterns were indexed on tetragonal lattices.
