Definitive edition of epic poem recording the Cid's youthful deeds. Mocedades de Rodrigo, telling of the youthful deeds of Rodrigo Diaz, the Cid, is a rare surviving (incomplete) epic poem from medieval Spain. Its importance cannot be overestimated. The present edition bears witness to theeditor's long engagement with the text, and will rapidly be accepted as the definitive edition. It includes a paleographic transcription of the manuscript (Crónica rimada), a critical edition of the poem reworked by a pro-Palentinian cleric (Refundición de las Mocedades de Rodrigo), and a conjectural reconstruction of the original epic (Gesta de las Mocedades de Rodrigo). This editorial work is rounded off by a complete study of the poem's characteristics as a product of the late epic tradition in Castile, the process of its composition, its narrative structure, ideology and contextual inscription. Accompanying literary analysis constitutes an exhaustive commentary on the poem, drawing on modern scholarship and providing new insights. Mocedades de Rodrigo es uno de los escasos poemas épicos conservados de la España medieval, que cuenta las hazañas de juventud de Rodrigo Díaz, el Cid. Llegado a nosotros en un único testimonio incompleto, es imposible sobreestimar su importancia. La presente edición da cuenta del profundo conocimiento del texto logrado por el editor tras muchos años de dedicación, por lo que rápidamente será aceptada como edición definitiva. Consta de una transcripción paleográfica del manuscrito (Crónica rimada), una edición crítica del poema reelaborado por un clérigo pro-palentie las Mocedades de Rodrigo) y una reconstrucción conjetural del poema original (Gesta de las Mocedades de Rodrigo). Reading Illegitimacy in Early Iberian Literature presents illegitimacy as a fluid, creative, and negotiable concept in early literature which challenges society’s definition of what is acceptable. Through the medieval epic poems Cantar de Mio Cid and Mocedades de Rodrigo, the ballad tradition, Cervantes’s Novelas ejemplares, and Lope de Vega’s theatre, Geraldine Hazbun demonstrates that illegitimacy and legitimacy are interconnected and flexible categories defined in relation to marriage, sex, bodies, ethnicity, religion, lineage, and legacy. Both categories are subject to the uncertainties and freedoms of language and fiction and frequently constructed around axes of quantity and completeness. These literary texts, covering a range of illegitimate figures, some with an historical basis, demonstrate that truth, propriety, and standards of behaviour are not forged in the law code or the pulpit but in literature’s fluid system of producing meaning.

This book takes a new look at the place occupied by medieval Spanish epic within European folk and literary tradition. Thomas Montgomery traces the origins of key parts of most known medieval Spanish epics to an ancient myth. He shows how the myth of the initiation of the young warrior, shown by Georges Dum&ézil to be fundamental to the belief systems of widely distributed Indo-European peoples, was variously adapted to shape the action of texts including the Siete Infantes de Lara, the Mocedades de Rodrigo, and the Poema de Mio Cid, in which it accounts for the peculiar behavior of the Infantes de Carri&ón. Montgomery also connects the same mythic tradition to works as diverse as Tristan and the Chanson de Roland. In a preliterate society, the oral presentation of this archetypal lore required a special language capable of re-creating the ritualized behavior of the epic characters and maintaining the ceremonial tone of the performance. Focusing on the Poema de Mio Cid, Montgomery examines the ways in which the poetic language worked to evoke a feeling of group unity that absorbed the audience and still works its spell upon today's readers.
