One of the founding members of the NAACP and the first editor of its influential publication, The Crisis, W. E. B. Du Bois had a tremendous impact on the fledgling civil rights movement. He began his career in the late nineteenth century as a scientist but was soon swept up in the growing fight against discrimination and racism. Du Bois clashed with other black leaders, including Marcus Garvey and Booker T. Washington, establishing himself as a fiery, independent personality.
