Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Our Army From Colonial Days to the Present Time, Vol. 1 Two lanterns gleaming in the belfry of the Old North Church, which still stands looking down upon the Copp's Hill burying ground in Boston and upon the huddled homes of innumerable Italians who have made that part of the ancient American city their home, signalled the beginning of the American Revolution. Their flickering light faintly illumined the birth of the United States of America. On the farther shore of the tidal River Charles, on that midnight of April 18, 1775, stood Paul Revere, a young engraver of Boston, who had been often used as a courier by the Committee of Safety, which had been formed among the Colonists to resist British aggressions. It was vague rumor that the British, long cooped up in Boston, would move that night to Lexington and Concord to destroy the munitions of war that the Colonists had gathered there in distrust of what the future might have in store for them. More than that it was the British purpose to seize the bodies of two "pestilent agitators," John Hancock, whose name was afterward writ large at the head of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and stout Sam Adams, who deserves if does any man the title of "Father of the American Revolution." American Military History Volume 1

American Military History Volume 1 PDF Author: Army Center of Military History
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781944961404
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 436

Book Description
American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book Description
Excerpt from History of the American War, Vol. 1: First Year of the War (1861-62) Whatever opinion may be formed of this book, the Author can honestly say, that he has endeavoured to write the truth, unbiassed by any leaning to either side. If his greater experience of the Federal Armies and his personal friendship for many of the officers might lead him to an undue sympathy for their cause, it would be counteracted by the admiration he feels for the indomi table spirit shown by the Confederates, evinced both by their gallantry in the field, and by the patience with which they have suffered the hardships and miseries of a war waged on their own soil and attended with peculiar trials. Writing as lie does on events which have oe curred so recently, this narrative will be Open to the criticism of many of the actors in those events, who are in possession of far more precise information than any that the Author could obtain. Should any inac curacies or misstatements be noticed, the Author assures them that they are not the result of any party bias. Book Description
Excerpt from America and Her Army American Government supplies the usual food and clothing to the army, and has done it, upon the whole, regularly and copiously. But the agents of the American people are every where present with ample stores of everything which men require, to place it beyond all doubt that the American soldier shall suffer no discomfort which it is possible to avert. There is a perfect fitness in this arrangement. For of this war it may be said, without qualification or reserve, that it is the war or the people. N 0 Government made it. It was from the outset the fixed determination of the Northern people that the nation should not submit to dismemberment. This is their own war, fought by their own sons and brothers, for the accomplishment of purposes which are dearer to them than life. It is fitting that they should assume the care of an army which is so emphatically their own. We do not understand aright the spirit in which the American people are fighting out this mighty quarrel till we know what care they bestow upon their soldiers.
