Sir Robert Walpole's Poets

Sir Robert Walpole's Poets PDF Author: Tone Sundt Urstad
Publisher: University of Delaware Press
ISBN: 9780874136906
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
"During Sir Robert Walpole's term as "Prime Minister" exorbitant amounts of money were spent on propaganda in support of his administration. Since nearly all the major writers of the period adopted an anti-government stance, however, historians have shown far more interest in the organization and contents of opposition propaganda than in its pro-government counterpart. This book is the first comprehensive study of the literature published in support of Walpole's administration, and explores important pro-government themes, and also explains how the propaganda network was organized and what precisely the Old Corps Whig leadership hoped to achieve."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Corrupt Histories PDF Author: Emmanuel Kreike

Book Description
Corruption is a preoccupation of governments and societies across place and time, from the 18th-19th Century British, Chinese, and Iberian empires to 20th Century Nazi Germany, Russia, the United States, and India. This study offers three different perspectives on corruption. The first chapters highlight corrupt practices, taking as a point of departure a technocratic definition of corruption. The second part of the book views corruption through the lens of discourses of corruption, revealing that accusations of corruption have been employed as tools, often in the context of contestations of power. The essays in the third part of the book treat corruption as a process, taking into account its causes and effects and their impact on society, economics, and politics. The Cultural Politics of Opera, 1720-1742

The Cultural Politics of Opera, 1720-1742 PDF Author: Thomas McGeary
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer
ISBN: 1837651698
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 375

Book Description
Explores the intersection of the world of opera, literature and partisan politics to show how Italian opera was put to use in the 'culture wars' of the day. This last of a trilogy of books on opera and politics in Britain examines the cultural politics of opera during the ministerial reign of Sir Robert Walpole from 1720 to 1742. The book explores the intersection of the world of opera, literature, and partisan politics to show how Italian opera - with its associations with the court, ministry and Britain's social-political elite - was put to use in the 'culture wars' of the day: how Italian opera was used for partisan political advantage; how political work could be accomplished by means of opera. It shows that attacks on opera had ulterior targets. The book surveys a range of often overlooked verse and prints to show how critique or satire of opera were a means for oppositional writers to delegitimize the Walpole ministry. Polemicists framed opera as a consequence of the corruption, luxury and False Taste generated by Walpole's ministry. It closes in the watershed year 1742: Handel had produced the last of his Italian operas the previous year, Walpole fell from power, and Alexander Pope published the last book of his Dunciad project.
