Book Description
Excerpt from The State of the Protestant Religion in Germany: In a Series of Discourses Preached Before the University of Cambridge The following Discourses were delivered in the month of May last, in the discharge of my duty as one of the Select Preachers for the past year; and they are now sent to the Press in compliance with a very flattering suggestion from the present highly respected Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Le Blanc, and the advice of several University friends. I feel it also a duty to bring forward some proof of the heavy accusations made against a large body of the German divines, and I only regret that the deficiency of books has not enabled me to make that proof so complete as I could wish. For although some of the most noxious works arc in common use among us, I am unable to obtain in this country many which I deem necessary for illustrating the growth and progress of the opinions I have ventured to attack. Edward Bouverie Pusey and the Oxford Movement

Edward Bouverie Pusey and the Oxford Movement PDF Author: Rowan Strong
Publisher: Anthem Press
ISBN: 0857285653
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
The Oxford Movement, initiating what is commonly called the Catholic Revival of the Church of England and of global Anglicanism more generally, has been a perennial subject of study by historians since its beginning in the 1830s. But the leader of the movement whose name was most associated with it during the nineteenth century, Edward Bouverie Pusey, has long been neglected by historical studies of the Anglican Catholic Revival. This collection of essays seeks to redress the negative and marginalizing historiography of Pusey, and to increase current understanding of both Pusey and his culture. The essays take Pusey's contributions to the Oxford Movement and its theological thinking seriously; most significantly, they endeavour to understand Pusey on his own terms, rather than by comparison with Newman or Keble. The volume reveals Pusey as a serious theologian who had a significant impact on the Victorian period, both within the Oxford Movement and in wider areas of church politics and theology. This reassessment is important not merely to rehabilitate Pusey's reputation, but also to help our current understanding of the Oxford Movement, Anglicanism and British Christianity in the nineteenth century.

The History of Christianity in Britain and Ireland

The History of Christianity in Britain and Ireland PDF Author: Gerald Bray
Publisher: Inter-Varsity Press
ISBN: 1789741181
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 821

Book Description
The history of Britain and Ireland is incomprehensible without an understanding of the Christian faith that has shaped it. Introduced when the nations of these islands were still in their infancy, Christianity has provided the framework for their development from the beginning. Gerald Bray's comprehensive overview demonstrates the remarkable creativity and resilience of Christianity in Britain and Ireland. Through the ages, it has adapted to the challenges of presenting the gospel of Christ to different generations in a variety of circumstances. As a result, it is at once a recognizable offshoot of the universal church and a world of its own. It has also profoundly affected the notable spread of Christianity worldwide in recent times. Although historians have done much to explain the details of how the church has evolved separately in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, a synthesis of the whole has rarely been attempted. Yet the story of one nation cannot be understood properly without involving the others; so, Gerald Bray sets individual narratives in an overarching framework. Accessible to a general readership, The History of Christianity in Britain and Ireland draws on current scholarship to serve as a reference work for students of both history and theology.
