Book Description
Excerpt from General History of the State of Michigan; With Biographical Sketches, Portrait Engravings, and Numerous Illustrations: A Complete History of the Peninsular State From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time Some one has very properly written that the country is already overloaded with histories of itself; and the same writer as properly adds Not one of them pretends to constitute a general history of the United States in volumes, embracing a complete history of each State separately - a work that would be of incalculable value to the archives of every Commonwealth of the American Repub lic. It has been offered in reply to this, that the early history of the United States is so consolidated and intermingled as not to admit of being divided into volumes that would adapt themselves respectively to each State. The last argument holds good only in so far as the task of compiling such a work is a difficult one, involving much labor that can scarcely hope for just compensa tion. The work presented in this volume is threefold in its character, embracing a general history of Michigan, from its earliest settlement to the present time (unincumbered by the records of a neighboring Commonwealth), including illustrations and brief descriptive sketches of the most prominent features of the Peninsular State, with portraits and short biographical sketches of its present leading business and professional men. Book Description
Excerpt from Men of Progress: Embracing Biographical Sketches of Representative Michigan Men With an Outline History of the State EN OF progress is a legitimate fruit of the law of evolution. Modern journalism takes note of events in the history of persons as well as of peoples. When any noteworthy event in the life of a person of prominence in the social or business world occurs, the newspaper press regards it as within the line of its duty to publish a brief sketch of the person, in many cases giving, also, an etching or miniature likeness. When a person pays the last debt of nature, these publications are a source of information to the public, as well as of a satisfaction to friends, and may, in many cases, be valuable as matter of record in cases involving the rights of living persons. The difficulty of procuring information of the character indicated, just at the time when it is wanted, suggested to those connected with publications of The Evening News Association the desirability of the preparation, arrange ment and publication of sketches in the form embodied in this work. Pri marily, therefore, the work is designed for the convenience of the newspaper press of the State, and hence is, as first stated, a legitimate fruit of the law of evolution. Only a limited number of copies of the work are published. Aside from copies supplied to those directly represented in the work, copies will be placed in the leading libraries and leading newspaper offices of the State, and here its circulation will end. Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 630
Book Description
Excerpt from History of Wexford County, Michigan: Embracing a Concise Review of Its Early Settlement, Industrial Development and Present Conditions The same is true in writing the history of a city or community. There are always reasons why people congregate in one place rather than another, in starting a village that may grow into a great city, and these reasons are always Of interest to the reader and give him a far better conception Of the subject matter that is to follow. What is true Of an individual or a city is equally true of a county. There is always an interest in contemplating the reasons which lead people to leave an Old settled country, where every facility for comfort and enjoyment are within reach, and emigrate to a wilderness country, remote from civilization, and destitute Of even the most necessary conveniences that minister to the comfort Of the individual.
