Book Description
Excerpt from Splinters, Vol. 11: December, 1910 She likes to be different from ordinary people and adores being told she is queer. She really thinks that her greatest ambition is to avoid being commonplace. Doubtless this makes a very nice fad, but as an ambition it has its limitations. Then, too, high ambitions may be the finest things in the world, but how many of us who successfully hitch our wagon to a star, according to the formula, ever reach the star? We may hitch it with a double knot, and rivet the rope down with all sorts of prejudices, but when we get ready to seize that star it is somewhere up in the sky, blinking derisively. And yet I don't think lowly ambitions are quite what we need either; the sort of person who contemplates with calmness a lifetime spent sitting before the steam heater, in company with the family pussy, darning socks, is not all that one could desire as a life comrade. So perhaps what is needed in our ambitions as well as in most things, on this most extraordinary planet, is a happy medium - that much talked of, and seldom discovered stage, in which we succeed in satisfying the hopes and aspirations that our friends have for us, and still more, though doubtless it should be less, in satisfying ourselves. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: January 6, 1910 Prejudice and ignorance are gradually giving way before the light of truth. We have had the privilege of correcting many errors that have in the past crept into encyclopedias and histories, and in line with this we are pleased to see the commencement of the publication of the history of the Church in the Americana, one of the leading historical journals published in the United States. This magazine circulates among an intelligent class of people. The publication of these articles grew out of an attack made by a designing person on the origin of the Book of Mormon that appeared in the same magazine. The privilege was granted Elder B. H. Roberts to make a reply. Which was later followed by his being invited to write a short history of the Church to run through several numbers of the magazine. We feel to recommend this magazine to the Latter-day Saints, and trust they will support it with their subscriptions. The world is gradually learning that the Church has been mis understood and should have a respectful hearing. In fact this recognition has taken the form, among some of the Christian sects, of adopting certain principles of the gospel taught by the Church: The principle of revelation, the doctrine of the personality and individuality of the Godhead, the law of tithing, the Word of Wisdom, requiring temperance on the part of the members in the strictest sense, the abstaining from all harmful and unnecessary drugs and stimulants: the anointing of the sick with oil, and prayer in their behalf, and other principles revealed by the Lord to the Church. The dogmas of infant damnation and that there is no salvation beyond the grave have generally found disfavor and by many have been abandoned since the advent of the gospel into the world. While there are exceptions, the saints in general have been faithful and diligent in the discharge of their obligations, in keep ing the commandments required of them as members, and in listening to the counsel and instruction given them by the priest hood; and the officers of the Church, both general and local, have been actively engaged in performing the various duties devolving upon them. Book Description
Between 1907 and 1911, the United States was hit by the longest period of sustained terrorism in its history. Of more than 200 bombings that were carried out during this period, the most shocking was the dynamiting of the Los Angeles Times building on the morning of October 1, 1910, which killed twenty-one people. Deadly Times tells the fascinating story of the bombing, the search to apprehend the bombers, the issues that polarized the nation, and the dramatic trials that ensued. The magnificent cast of characters includes: General Harrison Gray Otis, owner of the Los Angeles Times, whose proposal to de-unionize San Francisco and Los Angeles led to its being singled out as a bombing target. William J. Burns, who tracked down the bombers and would eventually become the first director of the FBI. Earl Rogers, the brilliant criminal attorney, drinking companion of Jack London, who became the model for Perry Mason. The legendary Clarence Darrow, who defended the bombers And the bombers themselves, the brothers J.J. and J.B. McNamara, who on their arrest became symbols of capitalist treachery to the working class.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: October 6, 1910 The Pharisees and the Sadducees derived their authority for their differences largely from tradition and from a study of the Jewish scriptures; and the churches of to-day get their's principally from tradition and from the perusal of the Old and New Testa ments. Christ's apostles quoted the scriptures frequently to prove their doctrines but their authority came direct from heaven. The same is true as to the authority of John the Baptist. He says that he was sent by a heavenly messenger to baptize: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me (john 1: The saints quote the scriptures, too, and value them as God's word, but their authority to act in His name is by revel ation from Him through His Son Jesus Christ. However, since God is unchangeable, His doctrines will harmonize with each other from age to age. The Savior added to the teachings of Moses, but, in spirit, can hardly be said to have contradicted them. To the despised gospel the present day world has applied the derisive epithet Mormonism in like manner, the Antiochians, not content with the term brethren (romans 10: or saints (romans 1: 7) as used by the followers of Christ themselves, must invent the word Christian. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. (acts 11. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
