Book Description
A Plain Account of Christian Perfection by John Wesley is about the theory of perfection according to Christian theology. Excerpt: "1. WHAT I purpose in the following pages is, to give a plain and distinct account of the steps by which I was led, during the course of many years, to embrace the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This I owe to the serious part of mankind; those who desire to know all the truth as it is in Jesus. And these only are concerned with questions of this kind. To these I would nakedly declare the thing as it is, endeavoring all along to show, from one period to another, both what I thought, and why I thought so."

Book Description
Excerpt from The Spiritual Life, Doctrine and Practice of Christian Perfection Silence is an asset capable of very diverse investment. One may be fond of silence and loneliness because he is stupid, or ignorant; or because he wishes to spite his friends - a sullen silence, grieving those whose happiness depends on his kind words. Perhaps it may be the shyness of a bashful spirit that makes us hold our peace - a form of human respect. But religious solitariness is that prayerful wisdom which finds the soul's best solace in conversing alone with God. "Imagine, in the simplicity of thy heart, that thou art out of the world with God, that thou art already in eternity, separated from the body, and no longer disturbed by the things of earth" - an exhortation of Blessed Albertus Magnus, which needs but a grammatical re setting to become a definition of religious solitude. Let us realize that it is God's plan to sanctify us one by one. Holiness is indeed imparted by the outward medium of the Sacraments, yet it is an inward process. Now, "silence is the conversation of the divinity, the language of the angels, the eloquence of heaven, the art of persuading God." So said de Rance who had known all the joys and all the benefits of speech in his life in the world, and of silence in his life at La Trappe. Trust him with the scales for adjusting their relative value. We cannot conceive of anyone acquiring an intimate love of God, or a deep grief for sin, except he be fond of spiritual retirement. Holy love and holy sorrow are fruit of the tree of solitude. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practice of Christian and Religious Perfection, Vol. 2 of 3 Though this work is composed principally for religious, yet it is very useful to all Christians; and this second part, in particular, is so disposed, as to be of very great advantage to all secular persons who desire to give themselves entirely to God's service. For their first duty is to subdue their hearts by mortifying their passions, by subjecting their senses, (especially their tongue, ) and by humbling themselves before God, in order that those virtues and good works which they have planted in their souls, may spring up and bring forth such fruit as should be expected. It is for this reason that I treat first of mortification, then of modesty and silence, and afterwards of humility; which are the virtues a Christian ought chiefly practise in the beginning of his conversion. And because the Holy Ghost would have those that enter into God's service, remain in fear, and prepare themselves for temptation, I therefore speak in the fourth treatise, of the profit and advantage of temptations, and point out the means of overcoming them. In the fifth and sixth treatises, I show the obstacles that occur in the paths of virtue, and of how great advantage it is to walk always in these paths with joy and liberty. The Sin Nature

The Sin Nature PDF Author: Jimmy Swaggart
Publisher: Jimmy Swaggart Ministries
ISBN: 1941403468
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
The fall of man resulted in Adam and Eve losing all consciousness of God. They woke up to self and found themselves imprisoned by a completely new nature—the sin nature—which would poison the entire human race for all time. From then until now, the troubles of the world—wars, man’s inhumanity to man, his dependency on cruel vices, and the habits of hell—are all caused by the sin nature which rules every person. Of course the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ broke the hold of this deadly yoke and repositioned the believer in Christ. So why do Christians struggle so hard to live for God? In this revelatory book, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart explains how the sin nature, which remains in Christians, can be reactivated, and how victory over the world, the flesh, and the Devil can only be maintained through faith in the Cross of Christ.

The Scale of Perfection

The Scale of Perfection PDF Author: Walter Hilton
Publisher: Medieval Institute Publications
ISBN: 1580443931
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
Walter Hilton's The Scale of Perfection maintains a secure place among the major religious treatises composed in fourteenth-century England. This guide to the contemplative life, written in two books of more than 40,000 words each, is notable for its careful explorations of its religious themes and also as a monument of Middle English prose. Its popularity is attested by the fact that some forty-two manuscripts containing one or both of the books survive, with a relatively large number of manuscipts with Book I alone, which suggests it may have been the more popular of the two. Hilton (born c. 1343) was a member of the religious order known as the Augustinian Canons. There is reason to believe that be was trained in canon law and studied at the University of Cambridge. He was the author of a number of works in English and Latin, all much shorter than The Scale. He died at the Augustinian Priory of Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire in 1396. On the basis of the content of certain of his works it can be safely inferred that he was actively involved in some of the religious controversies current in England in the 1380s and 1390s, and his principal concern, evident in The Scale , is to defend orthodox belief, especially in the conduct of the contemplative life.
